Inspired Artist Serves up Mural When it came time to create a mural for the cafeteria at Hindley that captured life at the elementary school, artist Sandy Garnett drew on his own childhood: He grew up in Darien and attended Hindley for sixth grade. "They were looking for an artist that could create a mural that would symbolize a day at Hindley," said Garnett, who now works as an artist in South Norwalk. Garnett also created a mural of a Ferris wheel for the cafeteria. "We were looking for something to complement the larger mural. I hope that this one gives the kids good thoughts, maybe remind them of their favorite weekend…

That's when "Meet Us on Main Street" gets together to talk up interesting new reads -- and all are invited. "It's a fun drop-in program. I don't know any other library that has a drop-in book chat like this," said librarian Sally Ijams. "It's hugely popular." The group began in the summer of 2009 and was continued year-round after it was so well-received. "Every time I finish reading a book, I put it on a stack to share at the group," said Ijams. The librarians take turn…

Selectmen Clash Over Shuffle Plan Tempers flared at the Special Meeting of the Board of Selectmen Monday night as the Republican bloc led by First Selectman David Campbell pushed forward on the plans to relocate the Senior Center and Board of Education. Democratic Selectmen David Bayne and Callie Sullivan felt there were too many unanswered questions. The so-called "shuffle" project involves moving the Senior Center to Town Hall, establishing senior housing at the site of the old Senior Center, and relocating the Board of Education to 35 Leroy Ave. "There are too many fundamental questions about the overall concept," said…

Train Station Parking to Cost More Some commuters will pay more to park at the Darien train stations after a vote Monday night by the Darien Board of Selectmen to increase the cost of annual parking permits from $315 to $345. The decision was made after a public hearing at which Darien residents such as Jon Tomaszewski, who has been waiting six years for a permit, spoke out about parking problems and the high demand for the yearly parking passes. "Something has to be done," Tomaszewski said at the hearing. "It should be on a first-come, first-serve basis. Residents should be treated fairly and equally." Meanwhile, some who h…
