Actress Digs Into Her Character Actress Digs Into Her Character Actress Digs Into Her Character
Actress Digs Into Her Character As a method actor, Sarah Lee Michaels likes to get inside her characters and explore them. She is getting the opportunity to do just that as she prepares to perform in "Waiting for Philip Glass" at the Darien Library on Oct. 15 and 17. "What attracted me to method acting versus traditional technique is that, with method acting, you're putting yourself into the role," said Michaels, who attended the North Carolina School of Arts and later trained at the Lee Strasburg Institute in New York City. A "triple threat" as a singer, actor and dancer, Michaels says she is always working on her craft …
Campbell's Goal: Finish 'Shuffle' Campbell's Goal: Finish 'Shuffle' Campbell's Goal: Finish 'Shuffle'
Campbell's Goal: Finish 'Shuffle' First Selectman David Campbell jokes that his job is so hectic he sometimes wants to throw his Blackberry into the ocean. But before jettisoning his PDA and leaving office, there's one piece of unfinished business he wants to complete. "We would really like to get the shuffle project done," said Campbell, referring to Darien's plan to move the Board of Education offices and the Senior Center. The Senior Center will go to Town Hall, and the old Senior Center on Edgerton Street will be razed to make way for affordable seniors housing. And the Board of Education goes to the site of the old libr…
Center Expands Mission to Give Hope Center Expands Mission to Give Hope Center Expands Mission to Give Hope
Center Expands Mission to Give Hope The Center for Hope in Darien, which began 30 years ago to offer support for people dealing with grief, has grown beyond its original mission. The center started when a woman noticed how little support there was for her neighbor who had cancer. "It started in a church basement, as a critical illness support group, and from there it grew and grew," Director Deirdre Lewin said. "People would come who had critical illnesses, and we would focus on the patients and their families. It naturally evolved into a bereavement group as well." And since merging with the organization Family Centers in 20…

Craftsmen Forge Old-Time Skills Craftsmen Forge Old-Time Skills Craftsmen Forge Old-Time Skills
Craftsmen Forge Old-Time Skills In our fast-paced, industrialized world, it can be tough to imagine the craft and care that once went into making everyday items such as spoons and tools. That's why blacksmith Gregory Lirot and metalsmith Jim Freebairn try to give people a taste of what life was like in the 18th century. "I've been doing this since February of 2009," said Lirot, 17-year-old junior at Darien High School. Lirot, who is self-taught, enjoys making objects such as knives, hatchets, hooks and hammers. He says he would like to continue blacksmithing as a hobby and is interested in majoring in metallurgical science…

Students Score Record-High Marks The efforts of Darien High School students seem to be paying off. Advanced Placement scores were the highest ever, with 89 students winning AP Scholar Awards for their achievements. Additionally, SAT Math scores were the highest of all Connecticut public schools for the second year in a row. "I believe these strong scores properly reflect the excellent education that our students receive here at DHS," Principal Dan Haron said. He called the scores "a testament to our hard-working students and teachers who, along with parents, have a wonderful partnership that supports and prioritizes academi…

Network Offers Parents Expert Advice Any parent will tell you that raising kids is tough. That's why, as director of the YWCA Parent Awareness Network, Leslie Pennington brings in speakers to address some of the harder aspects of parenting. "We realize that parents can run into a lot of stumbling blocks when raising their kids, and that it can be really helpful to listen to an expert," said Pennington. "We're not putting on programs to tell people what to do, but to help make families more harmonious and lead to healthy development." Pennington, who is in her fourth year as director, became involved in the program when her kid…

Fund Focuses on Helping Community Kiki Karpen knows the people of Darien like to help their neighbors. As executive director of the Darien Community Fund, she sees firsthand how generous town residents can be. "Last year we gave away over $750,000 to 26 aid agencies," Karpen said. "Darien volunteers are very involved in the community and give back so much in both dollars and time." Its staff of more than 50 volunteers reads grant applications from groups and decides how to allocate the money. The organization began in 1951 w…
Kids Buckled Up? Better Make Sure Kids Buckled Up? Better Make Sure Kids Buckled Up? Better Make Sure
Kids Buckled Up? Better Make Sure Darien resident Conrad Jacques understands the importance of keeping children safe in cars. That's why he appreciates efforts of officials in educating parents on the proper installation of child safety seats. On Saturday, the Darien Police Department will do exactly that when it hosts its National Seat Check Saturday event. "It's great that they're doing that," Jacques said. "Sometimes parents have a hard time getting those seats in the car, so it's a great thing to have professionals helping us out with that." The event is sponsored by Students Against Destructive Decisions and will be he…
