Summer School Was Small but Strong Summer School Was Small but Strong Summer School Was Small but Strong
Summer School Was Small but Strong Chris Basta, who just completed his first summer as manager of the Darien Summer School Program, said that even though enrollment and revenue were down, the summer school program is still "robust, vibrant and fiscally sound." In his presentation to the Board of Education last Tuesday night, Basta said that Darien Summer School took in $564,362, down 11 percent from the previous year. However, expenses were also down, with the program spending only $355,156, a 17 percent decrease. Basta attributed the lower figures to the bad economy with some parents cutting extra summer school to meet their…

Nature Center Believes in Fairy Tales The Darien Nature Center is taking people back to a simpler time when it opens its new exhibit "The Secret World of Fairies" today. Nature Center Director Lynn Hamlen is hoping that children will respond to the magic of the exhibit. "Today children's lives are dominated by technology, and the concept of 'The Secret World of Fairies' seemed a perfect way to draw them back to nature using their imaginations as their guide," she said. The exhibit will feature small fairy dwellings created by 20 local artists. The dwellings are sculpted out of materials such as bark, twigs, feathers, flowers, r…

Town Gets $150K to Fix Pond Gov. M. Jodi Rell's office has awarded Darien a $150,000 grant to help pay for the dredging of Gorham's Pond. Karl Kilduff, administrative officer of Darien, is pleased but said the amount was much less than what Darien had sought. "We asked for a half million dollars," he said. "It was for two aspects: $150,000 was for the Darien Historical Society and $350,000 for Gorham's Pond." The Historical Society, which had planned to use the funds for restoration, did not receive any money. The $150,000 grant came from the Connecticut Small Town Economic Assistance Program, or STEAP. The money will…

"I thought that was missing."In August, Sahlia took his ideas to Anthony LoParco, longtime owner of Upper Crust. "Anthony and I have known each other for a while," said Sahlia. Campbell Takes Stand Against Abuse First Selectman David Campbell stood with members of the Darien Domestic Violence Task Force and issued a proclamation against domestic abuse Thursday. The proclamation was made at the start of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, which continues throughout October. "Domestic violence is usually thought to be about anger and should be kept as a 'family secret' or a socially acceptable behavior, but in reality it is a crime—one that is often witness by young children," said Campbell. He said the Darien Police Department receives more than 100 calls about domestic violence every year, making it …

Student Makes the Grade on AP Tests Most students find even one or two Advanced Placement tests to be a challenge. But last spring, Brandon Wong tackled nine of them in excellent form. He qualified for the National AP Scholar Award by scoring a 4 or above on all of his tests. Wong graduated from Darien High School in the spring and now attends University College London in the United Kingdom. "I thought it would be a great experience to gain international exposure overseas," he said. "Also, knowing that I wanted to pursue a BSc in economics, I would be able to get a degree in three years in London versus four years in the State…
Teacher Drums Up Support Teacher Drums Up Support Teacher Drums Up Support
Teacher Drums Up Support Jon Grauer, band director at Darien High School, knows how important it is for students to have good quality musical instruments. But some of the instruments at DHS are no longer in good shape, and it's time for new ones, he said. "If we want to build a high quality band, we need instruments that can cater to that," said Grauer. On Tuesday night, Richard Sadlon, director of music for Darien schools, outlined a plan for the Board of Education that would involve raising money to buy new instruments. "When you purchase instruments, they last several generations of students. The ones we have h…

Update: Abuse Workshop Canceled A workshop Thursday on self-esteem and its role in a child's involvement in abusive relationships has been canceled due to the weather and will be rescheduled for next month. The Darien High School Peace Works Club, headed by Courtney Stein and Emily Kelly, was to co-host the session with the Domestic Violence Task Force. The workshop centers on building self-esteem, which Domestic Violence Task Force chair Carol Piscitelli says is "one of the factors that can be used to effectively handle bullying and abusive relationships." "Parents want their children to succeed," said Piscitelli. "Whe…
