Stamford's Haggerty Steps Forward for U.S. Team For a 17-year-old, Stamford's Ryan Haggerty gets around. His fall travel itinerary included stops in Sweden, Maine, Colorado, Iowa and his temporary home in Michigan. "It's a grind, but you have to battle through it,'' says Ryan, who traveled to the different locales with U.S.A. Hockey's Developmental Team. "It's like an American Hockey League schedule. It's a good learning experience." Haggerty played hockey for two years at Trinity Catholic before getting selected to play for the Developmental Team. Westport's Michael Paliotta is also a member of the team. It plays against college squads …

Norwalk Kids Keep Climbing for the Top Norwalk Kids Keep Climbing for the Top Norwalk Kids Keep Climbing for the Top
Norwalk Kids Keep Climbing for the Top Nine-year-old Francesa watched as her sister, T'Keyha, 6, climbed the rock wall Monday at the Breakthrough Options For Families holiday party at the Sono Field House. "I'm going to go higher than her,'' Francesca said as she watched her sister make it halfway up the wall. When Francesca's time came, the fourth-grader at Side by Side Community School worked her way up the 30-foot wall. One careful step at a time, she navigated her way to reach a candy cane placed at the top. "I was nervous and scared that I was going to fall,'' Francesca said. "I was proud that I made it to the top for the fi…

New Canaan Girls Hold Off Darien As the season goes deeper and the stakes get higher, New Canaan High's girls basketball team might look back on Tuesday's 46-44 victory as one of its defining moments. As teams try to take brilliant point guard Sarah Mannelly away from the Rams, other players need to hit shots and handle the ball at critical times. That's precisely what happened down the stretch Tuesday. "That's what we've been working on,'' New Canaan coach Kim Palmer said as the Rams improved to 4-1. "Sarah's a game changer, and we're lucky to have her. She's actually better when the other four are contributing. When we re…

Darien Girls Fall Short Against New Canaan Darien High's girls basketball team did a terrific job handling New Canaan's high-scoring guard Sarah Mannelly, holding her to just 10 points. And sophomore Meg Marren exploded for 31 points, including 15 in the fourth quarter. Unfortunately for the Blue Wave, they still came up short, 46-44, on their home floor in a Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference contest. "We had our opportunities, but we didn't finish in the first half, especially,'' Darien coach Gary Peterson said. Mannelly hit two 3-pointers in the opening minutes as the Rams (4-1) raced to an 8-0 lead. "If you forg…

Darien Girls Fade After Fast Start Darien's girls hockey team couldn't have asked for a better start to Monday's game against New Canaan. Sara Shaker scored twice in the first 2:37 minutes as the Blue Wave jumped out to a 2-0 lead in a rematch of last season's Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference and state championship games. A few minutes later, a Darien penalty seemed to wake up the Rams. They went on to a 7-2 victory before a lively crowd at Darien Ice Rink. "It was nice for those first few minutes,'' Darien coach Al Gurney said. "Then we were shorthanded for about eight minutes and they took advantage o…
