Coach Puts Girls Hockey on the Map The Wilton High's girls hockey team defeated Notre Dame-Fairfield on Wednesday to improve to 3-0 in its third year as a varsity team. And that's a reason to celebrate: The win total matches the total number of victories from its first season in 2008-09. Already this winter, the Warriors, led by coach Kerry Leonard, have defeated Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference rivals Darien and Greenwich, two teams they had never before beaten. They have outscored opponents 16-5 and are two wins away from matching last year's total. "I would say,'' Leonard said, "that this has come faste…

Saugatuck Rower Will Continue Career at Columbia Saugatuck Rower Will Continue Career at Columbia Saugatuck Rower Will Continue Career at Columbia
Saugatuck Rower Will Continue Career at Columbia Graham Anderson's college choice shocked even his parents. They figured their son, who grew up in Weston, rowing for the Saugatuck Rowing Club in Westport and making only occasional forays into New York, would choose a leafy campus far from the bustle of city streets. Anderson, a gold medal winner at June's USRowing Junior Championships in the 2x with teammate Max Meyer-Bosse, chose Columbia. "My parents weren't expecting that,'' said Graham, a 17-year-old senior at Weston High School. "They were expecting a more rural school, something like Cornell or even Yale, in a city that's not as big.…

Santagata Helps Stamford Turn Back McMahon Stamford High's girls basketball team faced an important contest Friday at Brien McMahon High just four games into the Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference season. Led by freshman Kelsey Santagata, the Black Knights' passed their first exam. Santagata scored 22 points and grabbed 14 rebounds as Stamford (2-2) held off McMahon, 50-39. The Black Knights lost Kelsey Cognetta, a first-team All-FCIAC pick last year, for the season in the season's second game. A loss to the Senators would have left the Black Knights with an uphill climb. Difficult games against Trumbull, Danbury an…

Cold-Shooting McMahon Stopped by Stamford Brien McMahon High School's girls basketball team came out cold against Stamford in Friday's Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference game, and the Senators never got warmed up from the floor. The Black Knights defeated the Senators, 50-39, and both teams stand at 2-2 in league play. McMahon did not make a shot from the floor for the first 12:41 and shot a frigid 4-for-26 from the floor in the first half, for 15 percent. Still, the team trailed only 22-14. "I thought we had some good shots, but they just didn't go in the basket,'' McMahon coach Mark McElveen said. "Sometimes tha…

Fairfield 5K Sunday Could Get Flaky If last year's weather didn't stop the Holiday 5K Run For Toys at the Scandinavian Club in Fairfield, virtually nothing will. Twenty brave runners ventured out last year to slog through about a foot of snow. This year's edition doesn't seem to have those weather concerns. There is snow in the forecast for Sunday, but it may not start until the race is completed. The 5K begins at 9:30 a.m. at the Scandinavian Club on South Pine Creek Road. Runners can register online or the day the event. A new unwrapped toy is also required. The race is the final event on the Fairfield County running ca…

Norwalk Coach Is on Top of World for Rowers Norwalk Coach Is on Top of World for Rowers Norwalk Coach Is on Top of World for Rowers
Norwalk Coach Is on Top of World for Rowers Maritime Rowing Club coach Yan Vengerovskiy was thousands of miles away from last month's World Rowing Championships in New Zealand. But at home in Norwalk, he felt as close to two competitors as if he had been right there rowing with them. Vengerovskiy recalled with pride the development of Norwalk's Dan Walsh and New Canaan's Charlie Cole, who rowed on the Men's 8 that finished sixth in New Zealand. Although the crew was disappointed with the result, Vengerovskiy beamed at having two of his athletes on the team. "I wasn't surprised because they show their strength in the trials,'' he said…
