Fall to Fairfield
Fall to Fairfield The Norwalk Biddy seventh-grade boys basketball team dropped a tough 62-49 decision to the Fairfield PAL Hoyas Sunday at Roger Ludlowe Middle School in a Fairfield County Basketball League game. Ryan Allen scored 17 points to lead Norwalk  (0-3), while Joey Cantui scored 15. Ralph Maginot added 12. Fairfield built a big lead in the second half and Norwalk whittled it to single digits several times, but the Hoyas (2-2) pulled away down the stretch. Norwalk returns to action on Jan. 2 in a non-league game at the Stamford Jewish Community Center.

Roll Past Norwalk The Fairfield PAL Hoyas made it to the seventh-grade championship game in the B Division of the Fairfield County Basketball League last winter. Coach Dwight Vaughn is hoping to take them a few steps farther this year. The Hoyas looked strong Sunday, beating the Norwalk Biddy team, 62-49, behind 16 points from Chris Smaldone. Jared Collier added 14 for the Hoyas, who built a big second half lead before coasting home. "We're trying to put this team on another level,'' Vaughn said. "We lost in the championship last year to St. Theresa [Trumbull], and we're trying to see if we can step up a l…

Greenwich Girls Hockey Falls to Wilton Greenwich Girls Hockey Falls to Wilton Greenwich Girls Hockey Falls to Wilton
Greenwich Girls Hockey Falls to Wilton Greenwich hockey coach Kevin Turbert thought his team might gain some momentum late in the first period when Meghan Spezzano's score gave the Cardinals a 1-1 tie. Wilton's Lara Schnitzler then went to work on the young Cardinals. She kept shooting, and she kept finding the net. Schnitzler scored six goals, including three in a span of 1:28 in the second period, to lead the Warriors (2-0) to a 7-2 victory over Greenwich (0-2). "She was the dominant player today,'' Turbert said. "She has really developed her game, and their coach, Kerry Leonard, has done a good job with that team. She has put…

Schnitzler's 6 Goals Pace Wilton Over Greenwich Senior forward Lara Schnitzler played her best game in more than two years on Tuesday, according to Kerry Leonard, the Wilton High School girls hockey coach. It would be hard to argue with the Warriors' coach. Schnitzler scored six straight goals for the Warriors (2-0) as they overpowered Greenwich, 7-2, at Hamill Rink. It was Wilton's first-ever victory over the Cardinals. "I've never had a game like this before,'' Lara said. "Starting 2-0 and beating Darien and Greenwich is just an amazing feeling." Hayley McCurdy scored Wilton's first goal 6:14 into the first period, assisted by Madison…

Holds Off Greenwich The Darien YMCA Blue sixth-grade boys basketball team defeated Greenwich, 43-37, in a tight Fairfield County Basketball League game Sunday. Darien (4-2) opened up a 17-point lead before Greenwich used its full-court press to slice into the deficit. Greenwich's pressure allowed it to get within two points with less than two minutes remaining. Key defensive stops and rebounds by Charlie Wright and Charlie Sealy and excellent free throw shooting by Jackson Ryan and Carter Scott (a combined seven for eight) helped Darien hold on. Casey Brown was a big part of Darien's early success. He pulled …

Sophomore Sean Obi dominated the paint when on the floor, scoring 20 points on 14 shots and pulling down 17 rebounds. GFA's other starting sophomore, Hunter Eggers, also shot well, going 6 for 11. for National Title Brett Mayer will compete for the second time in the U.S. Junior Figure Skating Championships beginning Wednesday in Salt Lake City. The 13-year-old Stamford boy is convinced the experience will be far better than his first. "I didn't do that well, but I did achieve some of my goals,'' said Brett, an eighth-grader at Turn of River Middle School who competed at last year's junior championships in Cleveland. "I didn't skate terribly, but I didn't skate my best, either. It had a lot to do with nerves. I was kind of tense, and I really didn't focus. This time I'm going into it with a lot more con…
