Honan, 83, was a Redding resident, according to his obituary in the New York Times. Honan was the editor of the Arts & Leisure section for the newspaper from 1974 to 1982, when he was named culture editor. He later worked as a cultural, higher education and national correspondent before retiring in 2000. He was also the author of several books.
