Norwalk Riptide Softball Team Finishes Strong At World Series NORWALK, Conn. – The Norwalk Riptide 16-and-under softball team won the consolation bracket of the Babe Ruth World Series Wednesday with a 4-0 victory over Fern Creek, Ky. Amy Hurd tossed a two-hitter for Norwalk, which went undefeated in winning the Mark Raper Memorial Tournament bracket. Westport Little League Puts Unbeaten Record On The Line WESTPORT, Conn. – The Westport 12-and-under Little League All-Stars put its undefeated record on the line Wednesday in their final pool play game in the New England Regional in Bristol. Westport is 3-0, the only undefeated team in the six-team regional. The All-Stars play Newton, Mass., at 4 p.m. Wednesday. Betty Cottin Miller, 88, Former Peekskill Resident PEEKSKILL, N.Y. -- Betty Ruth Cottin Miller, a former resident of Peekskill and Mamaroneck, died on Aug. 2 in Brighton, Mass. She was 88. Ms. Miller was the wife of Dr. Bernard S. Miller, the former principal at Peekskill High School. She was also an educator, working as a longtime English teacher at Mamaroneck High School. She started a program for students with learning disabilities and helped set up an open-curriculum “school-within-the-school.” She graduated from Queens College in 1946. Sleepy Hollow Native Adam Badeau Witnessed Civil War Surrender SLEEPY HOLLOW, N.Y. -- Adam Badeau, a resident of Sleepy Hollow, was an eyewitness to history when Gen. Robert E. Lee surrendered to Gen. Ulysses S. Grant at Appomattox Court House in 1865 and later served as a confidante to President Grant. He later was a U.S. consul-general in London and Havana. In his final years, he was the author of several military history books. Badeau was born in New York City on Dec. 29, 1831. Westport Team Wins 10/11 State Softball Championship WESTPORT, Conn. – The Westport Little League's 10- and 11-year-old softball team defeated Enfield, 16-0, to win the state championship last week in Newington. It is the first Little League title for the Westport softball program. Westport dominated Enfield in the winners’ bracket final, 14-7, after opening the tournament with a 13-3 win over Seymour.
