Westport Little League Rolls Behind Chad Knight's No-Hitter WESTPORT, Conn. – The Westport Little League All-Stars rode the no-hit pitching of Chad Knight to an 8-0 win over Edgewood on Thursday in Stamford in its first game in the Section 1 Little League Tournament. Westport will play Orange on Saturday at 1 p.m. at Federal Field in Stamford. Westport is undefeated this summer in eight games in District 2 and Section 1 tournament play. Knight was the story in Thursday’s win. He fanned 13 batters and got stronger as the game went on. Edgewood, the District 5 champion, was silenced one night after scoring 23 runs in a win over Stamford National. …

First-Rate Volunteers Propel Pound Ridge Fire Department POUND RIDGE, N.Y. -- I recently visited with Eddie Trail, chief of the Pound Ridge Volunteer Fire Department. He showed me the emergency vehicles and explained the history and mission in serving town residents. Some may not know our Fire Department was officially organized in 1933. Another interesting fact: in 1936 when the department was in a small structure behind Samuel Parker’s store, the fire house burned down. Hines' Legacy Still Lives In Ossining Schools OSSINING, N.Y. -- Hester Bateman Spencer Hines was born in North Carolina in 1923. She was a direct descendant of the Rev. Henry E, Duers, founder of the Star of Bethlehem Baptist Church, in Ossining. Upon her graduation from Shaw University in 1941, she taught in her home for two years before moving to Ossining.
