Fairfield 9-10 Softball All-Stars Stay Alive In Sectional Tournament FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Fairfield Little League Girls Softball team advanced to the championship round of the Section 1 tournament Monday with a 5-0 victory over Orange. Kylee Holderied struck out 15 in a complete-game one-hitter to propel Fairfield, which will meet Seymour in the championship round. The teams meet Tuesday at 6 p.m. in Wallingford. Fairfield, which has one loss in the tournament, would need to beat Seymour twice to advance to the state championship round. Southport Cancer Survivor Takes On Challenge For First Time FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Workers at the Connecticut Challenge’s Center for Survivorship call Southport’s David Tisdale “The Orchid Guy.” His support for the organization goes way beyond his commitment to help beautify the center’s interior. Tisdale will ride in the Connecticut Challenge for the first time July 27. He will ride 25 miles; the event also had rides of duration ranging from 10 to 100 miles on that day, and an 80-mile ride July 26. Some sturdy cyclists will attempt to ride 180 miles over two days. Slight Thaw Seen In Sales Of High-End Homes In New Canaan NEW CANAAN, Conn. – Last month’s sale of a home in New Canaan for $5.2 million could represent a slight thaw in the recent ice cold purchases of high-value real estate, one expert said. Sales for homes of more than $3 million improved in the first half of 2013, said William Pitt Sotheby’s International Realtor Rachel Walsh, who represented the buyers for the home at 120 Clearview Lane. Greenwich's Karen Newman Wins Senior Games Triathlon GREENWICH, Conn. – Greenwich triathlete Karen Newman won the National Senior Games triathlon Sunday in the 50-54 age division in Cleveland. Newman crushed the rest of the field, winning in 1:08:04. The second-place finisher trailed Newman by more than eight minutes. Results are online. The race consisted of a 400-meter swim, 18-mile bike ride and 5K run. Newman ranked first in the swim and run, and second in the bike. Rower From Norwalk Club Competes For U.S. Squad NORWALK Conn. – Wilton’s Robin Ritchey, who competes for SoNo Rowing, represented the United States last week at the CanAmMex Regatta in Oklahoma City, Okla. The race features international competition for junior rowers for teams from the United States, Canada and Mexico. Ritchey competed in two events. She rowed as the A entry in the women’s single and stroked on the women’s quad. She finished second in both events. Danbury Sports Dome Opens For Business DANBURY, Conn. – After months of delays, the Danbury Sports Dome opened for business Monday at 25 Shelter Rock Lane. Construction on the facility, which includes more than 100,000 square feet of space, began in June 2012. The project has been in the planning stages for three years. Superstorm Sandy last November caused some construction delays, and a harsh winter further hampered efforts to install parking.
