Westport Umpire Gets East Region Assignment WESTPORT, Conn. – Brian Kurtz’ baptism as an umpire came when he worked men’s recreational softball games in Brooklyn and Queens in the early 1990s. “It really hardened me,” said Kurtz, who started calling balls and strikes as a 16-year-old in the Spring Valley Little League in Rockland County in 1974. “If you made a call someone didn’t like, you really were in danger. It was heavy duty stuff.” Kurtz sharpened his skills, however, and became a much better umpire. Unfortunately for the Nationals, they could not deliver the knockout blow. North Stamford rallied from two two-run deficits to stun the Nationals, 5-4, in nine innings. Fairfield Town Tennis Tourney Finals Scheduled FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The finals of the Fairfield Town Tennis tournament take place this weekend at the Fairfield Tennis Center. Finals will be played in seven divisions beginning Saturday. Finals scheduled for Saturday include the women’s singles, men’s 45-and-over singles, mixed doubles and men’s doubles. Sunday’s finals include the men’s singles, men’s 45-and-over doubles and women’s doubles. The tournament is in its 73rd year, and includes town residents and cardholders of the Fairfield Tennis Center.

Norwalk Cal Ripken Baseball 9s Start State Play NORWALK, Conn. – The Norwalk Cal Ripken 9-year-old Baseball All-Stars meet Newtown Saturday at 3 p.m. in New Milford in the opening round of the state tournament. There are eight teams in the double elimination tournament. Norwalk plays at 5:30 p.m. Sunday with a victory Saturday, and at 12:30 p.m. Sunday if it loses.
