Stamford 8th-Graders Fall to Fairfield STAMFORD, Conn. – The Stamford Youth Basketball eighth-grade boys basketball team brought an impressive 7-1 record into Saturday’s game against Fairfield. Coach Mike Layton’s squad found out, however, that there other strong teams in the Fairfield County Basketball League. Fairfield held Stamford to its lowest offensive output of the season in a 57-40 victory. Cameron Kelly scored 18 for Stamford (8-2), which bounced back Sunday with a 44-37 win over Westport. Skyliners Juniors Win U.S. Crown, Earn World Berth GREENWICH, Conn. – Competing against the best teams in the country, the Skyliners Junior line won the World Junior Team Selection competition in Lowell, Mass., and will be the top U.S. team at the Junior World Challenge Cup in Sweden in March. Area girls on the Junior line include Cos Cob's Brooke Abbott and Mairead Brock, Greenwich’s Alexandra Scarpulla and Pelham's Sennett Cooke. Former Weston Athlete Spending Year in Ghana WESTON, Conn. – Weston’s Christina Welsh was searching for a different world after finishing high school last June. The former volleyball and basketball standout found it in Ghana, where she is serving in Princeton University’s Bridge Year program. The nine-month program that takes place prior to the student’s freshman year focuses on community service and cultural immersion. Welsh left for Ghana in August, and spent the first four months in Accra. Earlier this month, she left for a village to begin a teaching assignment. Skyliners Skaters Strike Gold at Colonials FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. — The Skyliners Synchronized Skating Team enjoyed a successful trip to Lowell, Mass., for the Colonial Classic. The Prepreliminary, Preliminary, and Prejuvenile lines all took top honors, while the Juvenile and Senior lines earned silver medals. The Novice and Intermediate lines, competing in difficult divisions, each finished fifth. The Skyliners Prepreliminary team wowed the crowd with its program skated to the music “Lollipop."
