Staples Soccer Ousted by Farmington WESTPORT, Conn. Staples soccer team played in a ton of one-goal games this season. The Wreckers won their share, but could not pull one out Monday against Farmington in the second round of the Class LL playoffs. The No. 6 Indians held on to defeat No. 11 Staples, 1-0, in a rematch of last years state championship game. Farmington advances to Wednesdays quarterfinals at No. 3 Norwalk. Darien Runners Post a Historic Season DARIEN, Conn. The Darien High School boys cross country team came into the season with lofty goals. But none of the runners could have imagined the history-making season they would have. Darien finished ninth in Saturdays New England championships at Ponagansett High School in North Scituate, R.I. Stamford Runner Qualifies for Division III Race STAMFORD, Conn. Amherst College junior Andrew Erskine, a Stamford resident who graduated from Westhill High School, earned a berth in the NCAA cross country Division III championships. Erskine finished sixth at the New England championships at Bowdoin College, running 25:01.3 on the 6-kilometer course. The Division III championships will be run Saturday at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh. Complete details are available on the Amherst website, along with results from the race.

Norwalk Blue Thunder Girls Win State Championship NORWALK, Conn. The Norwalk Blue Thunder under-11 girls soccer team defeated Bethel on Sunday, 3-0, to win the Connecticut Cup. The title is the first girls state championship for the Norwalk Junior Soccer Association program. Norwalk scored with 10 minutes left in the first half and added two in the second half to put the game away. The final was at Tunxis Meade Park in Farmington. Norwalk's Zeus Swimmers Earn State Honors NORWALK, Conn. Several members of the Norwalk-based Zeus swimming team have been honored as Connecticut Top 16 swimmers. The list was compiled by Connecticut swimming based on meets during the 2010-2011 short-course season and 2011 long-course season. Fairfield Men Play Home Opener vs. Providence FAIRFIELD, Conn. Fairfield University meets Providence College Monday night at Webster Bank Arena in the return of former Fairfield coach Ed Cooley. Tip-off is set for 7:30. The Stags opened their season with a 72-60 victory over Quinnipiac on Friday.
