Stamford Athlete Wins World Triathlon Title STAMFORD, Conn. – Stamford's John Cook won the 75- to 79-year-old age group Sunday in the International Triathlon Union World Championships in Beijing. Greenwich's Karen Newman was 11th in the women's 50-54 division. Cook, 76, finished the Olympic distance course in 3 hours, 50 minutes and 13 seconds. It is the first world title for Cook, who finished 15th in the 2005 Age Group World Championships in Honolulu. Newman finished 11th in the women's 50-54 division in 2:50.15. Stamford Woman Wins Westport Triathlon WESTPORT, Conn. – Stamford's Megan Kelly made a triumphant return to the local triathlon scene Sunday by winning the women's division of the Westport Kiwanis Triathlon at Compo Beach. New York's Shane Meehan won the men's race for the third straight time. Kelly, who gave birth to triplets in May, led Connecticut women finishers in last month's age group triathlon championships in Vermont. Slain Serviceman Wins Sports Honor STAMFORD, Conn. – The Fairfield County Sports Commission announced Saturday that Navy SEAL Brian R. Bill is the 2011 Chelsea Cohen Courage Award winner. Bill, a Stamford native, was killed in action Aug. 6 in Afghanistan. He will be honored at the commission's seventh annual Sports Night awards dinner on Monday, Oct.17, at the Hyatt Regency Greenwich. Norwalk Woman Runs Off With Half Marathon Win NORWALK, Conn. – Norwalk's Julie Heaphy finished undefeated in her hometown this summer with a win in the women's division of Saturday’s Sam Elpern Half Marathon. Ansonia's Timothy Milenkevich ran to an overwhelming victory in the men's race. There were 223 finishers, six off the highest total in the 34-year history of the race. There were nearly 280 pre-registered runners. Humidity and heat forced some to drop out, while others did not make it to the starting line. Triathletes Get One Last Run in Westport WESTPORT, Conn. – Fairfield County triathletes get one of their final chances to dip their toes in the waters of Long Island Sound Sunday in Westport, capping a summer in which three county triathlons were canceled, The Westport Kiwanis Club triathlon begins at 7:30 a.m. at Compo Beach.
