Pros and Cons Wins Westport Volleyball Crown WESTPORT, Conn. Pros and Cons swept the Rejects, 2-0, to win the championship in the Westport Wednesday Night Co-Ed League. The league plays its games at Compo Beach and is sponsored by the Parks and Recreation Department. Pros and Cons fell behind in the first game of the best-of-3 series before pulling out the victory. In the second game, the eventual champions took an early lead only to see the Rejects slice the lead. Pros and Cons pulled away down the stretch to secure the title. Penn State Star From Norwalk Takes Leading Role NORWALK, Conn. Norwalk's Silas Redd is in the spotlight of all the media that cover Penn State football. The sophomore running back from King in Stamford talked about the fall season during the team's media day last week in State College, Pa. Redd rushed for 561 yards and two touchdowns as a freshman last year for the Nittany Lions, who finished 7-6 and lost to Florida, 37-24, in the Outback Bowl on Jan. 1. Easton Man Takes Top Spot in Triathlon EASTON, Conn. Easton's Chris Thomas won his fourth triathlon of the summer on Sunday, and he hardly needed to leave home to do it. Thomas, the owner of Personal Training Professionals in Southport, captured the Park City Mossman Olympic distance triathlon in Bridgeport. "I love competing this close to home,'' Thomas said. "My wife and three boys are able to come watch me race, and there is nothing better than that." Peter's Goes for 2nd Straight Title in Weston WESTON, Conn. -- Peter's Spirits is playing for its second straight title in the Weston Women's Softball League Tuesday at 6 p.m. when it meets the Weed Wackers at Hurlbutt Elementary School. Peter's defeated the Weed Wackers, 9-8, in dramatic fashion last week in the winners bracket final. Peter's scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth after overcoming a 7-2 deficit earlier in the game. Norwalk Packers Hit the Field NORWALK, Conn. -- The Norwalk Packers youth football teams are putting in their final practices as they prepare for their season openers this weekend. The teams for players in grades four-eight open with games on Saturday at Brien McMahon High School. Fourth- and fifth-grade teams also play Saturday in Sandy Hook, and sixth-, seventh- and eighth-grade teams also play Sunday in Newtown. Lake Club Divers Finish 4th in County WILTON, Conn. -- Members of the Lake Club diving team had a stellar end-of-season finish at the Fairfield County Diving Championships held by the Fairfield County Swimming League. The meets were hosted by area clubs during late July and early August. Lake Club finished fourth out of 30 teams participating in the county championship meets. Individually, leading the way was Cameron Rhind in the boys 12-and-under competition held at Burning Tree Country Club in Greenwich on Aug. 6. Westport Teen Takes 8th in Age Group Triathlon WESTPORT, Conn. Staples High School student Marcus Russi came in eighth overall and second among Connecticut finishers Saturday in the USA Triathlon Age Group National Championships in Burlington, Vt. Russi completed the sprint distance triathlon in 1:10.26. Russi, who also competes for the Staples swim team, finished the half-mile swim in 10:52. He completed the 12.4-mile bike ride in 37:26 and the 5K run in 20:33. Westport Swept in Men's Baseball Doubleheader WESTPORT, Conn. The Westport Cardinals qualified for postseason action in the Fairfield County Men's Senior Baseball League. But they won't be heading there with much momentum. The Cardinals dropped a doubleheader Sunday to New Canaan, 4-1 and 5-0, to finish the regular season 7-11. Beachside Soccer Aims To Build Upon Success What do you do when you've just completed one of your most successful spring seasons ever? If you're Beachside Soccer Club, you keep educating your coaches. You introduce new training methods for the fall. And you prepare for an even better year ahead. Soccerfest Kicks Off Season in New Canaan NEW CANAAN, Conn. The New Canaan Soccer Association and its coaching partner, NOGA, will host a Soccerfest on Sunday at the fields on Farm Road.
