Darien Schools Extend Calendar After Hurricane Sandy DARIEN, Conn. — The last day of school for Darien students has been pushed back six days due to Hurricane Sandy. Schools are now scheduled to get out June 18. School was canceled for an entire week due to the storm that knocked out power throughout town and rendered dozens of roads inaccessible. Students eventually went back to school Nov. 5. Because classes were held on Election Day, which was originally scheduled as a day off for professional development, the district had four days to make up at the end of the year. Darien Library Hosts Book Drive For Sandy Victims DARIEN, Conn. – The Darien Library will host a book drive this weekend to benefit those displaced by Hurricane Sandy. Community members are invited to donate any books that residents of the Rockaways, Staten Island or Coney Island might enjoy while they deal with the aftermath of the storm. The man told police when he arrived at the Rice King restaurant on Stevens Street, he saw three men hanging outside. Rising Darien School Enrollment Could Affect Budget DARIEN, Conn. -- Darien school officials are predicting that continually increasing enrollment could require more classroom sections and more staff in the coming years. The schools are facing the possibility of having to add four more elementary classroom sections next year, and as many as eight within the next five years.
