Weston Shows Support For Embattled Basketball Coach WESTON, Conn. – Supporters of former Weston High boys basketball coach Mike Hvizdo called for his reinstatement and lambasted school superintendent Colleen Palmer during an hourlong session of public comment at Monday’s Board of Education meeting at Weston Middle School. Wilton Girls Basketball '89 Team Retains Piece Of History WILTON, Conn. – For at least another year, the 1988-89 girls basketball team from Wilton High School will remain the only team in school history to win a league championship. “I’m surprised no one else has done it,’’ said Elizabeth DeRosa, who led Wilton with 17 points in the 53-49 win over Danbury in the 1989 Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference championship game. “I’m very surprised.” Wilton ripped off 14 straight victories to take a 17-1 record into the title game. New Canaan Synchronized Swimmers Second At East Meet NEW CANAAN, Conn. -- The New Canaan YMCA Aquianas Synchronized Swimming Junior team competed in the East Zone Junior Championships earlier this month in Pennsburg, Pa. A total of 140 athletes from 19 teams throughout the northeastern U.S. competed at the meet. The Aquianas, represented by only eight individuals comprising five routines, earned second place in the high point standings. Darien's Meg Marren Joins Exclusive 1,000 Point Club DARIEN, Conn. –Darien High School basketball player Meg Marren joined an elite list from the school when she scored her 1,000th career point earlier this month. Exactly how many members are on that list has been hard to determine, but you probably don’t need more than two hands to count them. Marren topped 1,000 points for her career Feb. 13 in a 62-25 victory versus Norwalk. She is believed to be the first Darien girl to surpass the plateau since Katherine Mattison in 1998. Danbury Girls Basketball Team Discovers Offensive Balance DANBURY, Conn. – Danbury High School’s girls basketball team found its offensive balance during its run to the Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference championship. It could not have come at a better time. The Hatters lost three of their last four regular season games as opponents tried to take away their primary threat, twin sisters Rachel and Rebecca Gartner. Stamford's Bobby Valentine Going To Sacred Heart STAMFORD, Conn. – Stamford native Bobby Valentine will be named the next athletic director at Sacred Heart University. Valentine, 62, will officially be introduced at a news conference Tuesday. He will succeed Donald Cook, who is retiring. Sacred Heart announced the hiring in a press release Friday afternoon.
