Easton's Brittney Dumas Wins Award As Top Rookie EASTON, Conn. – Easton’s Brittney Dumas, a graduate of Joel Barlow High School and a freshman at Hartwick College in New York, has been named the Empire 8 Women’s Basketball Rookie of the Year. Dumas has played in all 25 games for Hartwick (18-7). She has started 21 times, and is averaging 14.8 points and 6.1 rebounds per game. Greenwich Cheerleading Team Offers Special Focus GREENWICH, Conn. – Melissa Mansi pushes her special needs cheerleading team during weekly practices at Spirit Zone Too in Greenwich. Danbury Girls Basketball Aims For 2nd Straight Title DANBURY, Conn. – Danbury High School’s girls basketball team shoots for its second straight conference championship Thursday when it meets Trumbull at Fairfield Ludlowe High School. Tipoff is at 7 p.m. for the Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference championship game. The fourth-seeded Hatters are 19-3, while second-seeded Trumbull is 20-2. Greenwich's Claire Feeney Earns College Lacrosse Honor GREENWICH, Conn. – Greenwich’s Claire Feeney is off to a terrific start with the first-year women’s lacrosse team at Winthrop University. The freshman earned Big South Player of the Week honors after scoring seven goals in a 17-7 win over Marquette University last week. Weston's Emily Savage Sets Meet Mark In Pole Vault WESTON, Conn. – Weston High School’s Emily Savage won the pole vault at the State Open, set a meet record and lived to fight another day during Tuesday’s meet at the Floyd Little Athletic Center in New Haven. Savage, a senior, cleared 11 feet, 11 inches Tuesday. That broke by an inch the record set by Darien’s Robin Bone in 2010. Fairfield Runners Shine At State Open Track Meet FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Fairfield Prep’s Christian Alvarado won the 3200 meters and Fairfield Warde’s Cate Allen took second in the girls 1600 meters to highlight performances by Fairfield athletes at Tuesday’s State Open indoor track and field meet. Alvarado won the 3200 meters in 9:24:58, while Allen took second in the 1600 in 4:58.74. Westhill's Claire Howlett Sets Another School Record STAMFORD, Conn. – Westhill High School is going to need new ink soon to keep up with the distance running star Claire Howlett. Howlett became the first Stamford girl to go under five minutes for the 1,600 meters Tuesday when she finished third in the race at the State Open indoor track and field championships at the Floyd Little Athletic Center in New Haven. Staples Runners Win State Open Titles WESTPORT, Conn. – Staples High School’s Henry Wynne and Hannah DeBalsi had terrific individual performances but the boys' team came up short in its bid for a second straight title Tuesday in the State Open indoor track and field championships. Wynne won the 1,600 meters and 1,000 for Staples, extending his unbeaten streak in individual races this school year. Norwalk Woman Spins TV Gaffe Into Women's Concussion Website NORWALK, Conn. – A Super Bowl-day blunder by one of the nation’s top sportscasters propelled Norwalk’s Katherine Snedaker to create a website on concussions in women and girls. Staples Boys' Basketball Set For Critical Senior Night WESTPORT, Conn. – Staples High School’s boys' basketball team hosts Senior Night Wednesday against Bassick, and the stakes could not be any higher for the Wreckers. The Wreckers (11-8 overall, 10-7 Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference) need a victory to secure a berth in the league playoffs.
