Charity Motivates Greenwich Woman's Return To Marathon GREENWICH, Conn. – Greenwich runner Deirdre Hopkins has switched from running road races to doing trail runs over the past few years. In Sunday’s ING New York City Marathon, she’ll return to the streets with a new objective. Hopkins, 50, will run with a team from SAC Capital to raise money for the Robin Hood Foundation. The group targets poverty in New York City by finding funds and partnering with 200 of the city’s most effective anti-poverty programs and schools. Fairfield Woman Stars For American Cross Country Team FAIRFIELD, Conn. – American University’s Carly Birkhold, a junior from Fairfield, finished third for the school’s cross country team in the Patriot League Championships last weekend in Hamilton, N.Y. Birkhold finished 38th overall in 24:50.9 for the 6-kilometer course. American finished eighth in team scoring. Birkhold was a two-time all-league selection at Warde. She had a terrific indoor season last winter at American, where she won the 3,000 in the George Mason Patriot Games. Scofield Runners Take Stamford Middle School Titles STAMFORD, Conn. – Scofield Magnet School won the boys', girls' and co-ed team championships at the Stamford Middle School boys' and girls' cross country championships last week at Cove Island Park. The event included more than 300 runners from Scofield Magnet, Rogers International School, Dolan, Cloonan, Turn of River, Trailblazer's Academy and Rippowam. After Long Wait, Stamford Woman Is Ready For Marathon STAMFORD, Conn. – The journey to run the ING New York City Marathon for Stamford’s Lindsay Allain started in 2009. After three years of trying, she’ll finally step on the starting line Sunday morning in Staten Island. Allain will run the race with her friend Laura Zima of Schenectady, N.Y. The women tried to enter via the lottery for three straight years without success. Weston Women Run Strong For Towson University WESTON, Conn. – Weston High grads Kara Bucaro and Emma Tobin helped Towson University finish fifth at the Colonial Athletic Association cross country championships last weekend in Williamsburg, Va. Bucaro, a sophomore, finished in 29th place in 22:59.69 for the 6-kilometer course. She was Towson’s second runner. Tobin, a junior, finished in 52nd place in 23:51.4. Staples Softball Captures Fall League Title WESTPORT, Conn. – The Staples softball team won the championship in a fall softball league for high school teams. Staples beat Fairfield Ludlowe, 9-8, in extra innings in the semifinals. In the championship, Staples defeated Fairfield Warde, 15-1. Against Ludlowe, freshman Gabrielle Perry stole home to score the game-winning run. Pitcher Katie Burke also made several fine defensive plays, while Nikki Bukovsky powered the offense. Westhill Girls Savor History-Making Cross Country Run STAMFORD, Conn. – Westhill High’s girls cross country team has had its share of ups and downs this fall. But the Vikings will finish their season on a historic note Sunday in the State Open championships at Wickham Park in Manchester. Saturday Race In Fairfield Canceled FAIRFIELD, Conn. – A road race scheduled for Saturday in Southport has been canceled. Organizers are hoping to have a re-scheduled date by the end of week, according to a statement on the Southport Racquet Club's website. The inaugural 5k Run/Walk to End Alzheimer’s had been scheduled to begin at 8 a.m. Southport was hit hard by Hurricane Sandy, forcing race officials to cancel the race. A decision on the Reservoir Run half marathon in Weston is expected later today. The race is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. Sunday.

Easton Man Killed In Hurricane Enjoyed Family, Firehouse EASTON, Conn. – Russell Neary worked for 33 years at General Re in Stamford. His heart, however, was always centered on his family and his community. The Easton volunteer fireman died Monday while on a call at the height of Hurricane Sandy. “We used to kid him that General Re was just a hobby for him,’’ said Roy Hornbeck, who worked with Neary for 22 years and was his manager and close friend. “The firehouse was his career. Connecticut Cross Country Races Delayed Until Sunday FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. – The Connecticut State Open cross country championships scheduled for Friday have been postponed until Sunday due to Hurricane Sandy. The girls race will begin at 2 p.m., and the boys race will begin at 2:45 p.m. at Wickham Park in Manchester. The delay was announced Wednesday as the Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference delayed the start of state tournaments in all fall sports.
