Westhill Girls Earn Cross Country State Honors STAMFORD, Conn. – Westhill’s girls cross country team enjoyed a couple of firsts en route to a seventh-place team finish Saturday at the Class LL championships at Wickham Park in Manchester. Claire Howlett finished fourth and Nicole Ambrosecchio finished sixth, giving Westhill two all-state runners. In addition, the Vikings qualified for Friday’s State Open race. Both feats are first-time accomplishments for the Vikings. Alison Ambrosecchio, Isabelle Yick and Laura Schaffer helped the Vikings to finish seventh. Weston Boys Cross Country Wins State Crown WESTON, Conn. – Weston High won a cross country state championship in 2009, when the current group of seniors were untested freshmen. On Saturday, seniors Noah Krassin, David Stankiewicz and Will Glaser helped the Trojans win their fourth title under coach Marty Ogden. The Trojans won with 68 points, easily outdistancing runner-up Rocky Hill. James Murphy’s sixth-place finish led the Trojans. Krassin was 11th, followed by Glaser (14th), Stankiewicz (16th) and Sam Augusty (21st). Matthew Proctor and Henry Morris rounded out Weston’s lineup. Darien Football Stopped By Staples DARIEN, Conn. – Darien football coach Rob Trifone tried to find the bright side in Saturday’s 63-28 loss to Staples. “Playing against them makes you a better football team,’’ Trifone said after the Wreckers rolled to their sixth straight win. “We’re not playing anyone like that again this season. Dynamic Running Duo Helps Staples Football Rout Darien WESTPORT, Conn. – Staples football coach Marce Petroccio loves the offensive options he has for his undefeated Wreckers. In Saturday’s 63-28 blowout of Darien, he got to use all of them. Joey Zelkowitz and Nick Kelly combined for 291 rushing yards and five touchdowns as Staples improved to 6-0. Fairfield Warde Girl Wins State Cross Country Title FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Fairfield Warde’s Cate Allen is a fast learner. She’s pretty swift with her feet, too. The junior runner, competing in her first year of cross country, captured the Class L championship Saturday at Wickham Park in Manchester. Allen, who won the Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference championship, finished in 19:36 on the 5-kilometer (3.1-mile) course. Darien Boys Cross Country Wins Class L Title DARIEN, Conn. – For the third time in four years, Darien’s boys cross country team won a state class championship. Saturday’s may have been its most unlikely. With No. 1 runner Alex Ostberg out for the season with a broken fibula, the Blue Wave needed to have contributions from every runner in their seven-man lineup. Marshall Huffman’s fifth-place finish paced the Blue Wave, who held off E.O. Smith by two points. Stamford Woman Directs New Club's Softball Programs STAMFORD, Conn. – Stamford’s Maryann Macari, a former star player at Trinity Catholic and member of the Quinnipiac University softball Hall of Fame, has been named to the elite softball coaching staff at Chelsea Piers Connecticut. Ridgefield Football Stunned By McMahon RIDGEFIELD, Conn. – Ridgefield’s football team looked impressive during a five-game winning streak this fall after a season-opening loss to powerful Greenwich. Friday night, however, the Tigers that played Brien McMahon in Norwalk hardly looked like the same team. Young Stamford Tennis Team 2nd At National Tournament STAMFORD, Conn. – A tennis team from Stamford representing the New England Section of the United State Tennis Association finished second at the USTA Junior Team Tennis 14-and-under Advanced National Championships last week in South Carolina. The tournament brought together the top 32 teams at the intermediate and advanced levels from various USTA Sections throughout the country.
