New Canaan Synchronized Swimmers Shine in Buffalo NEW CANAAN, Conn. -- New Canaan YMCA Aquianas Synchronized Swimming team members had strong showings at the East Zone Age Group and Intermediate Championship in Buffalo, N.Y. earlier this month.  The competition included 247 swimmers from 14 teams throughout New England and the Northeastern United States. Fairfield-Based Gymnastics Team Wins State Crown FAIRFIELD, Conn. — The Level 4 team of the Gymnastics and Cheerleading Academy of Connecticut took first place at the Connecticut state championships earlier this month in Old Saybrook. The Fairfield-based team had an all-around score of 183.025, nearly two points ahead of the second and third place squads. Easton Triathlete Finishes 9th in Maryland Race EASTON, Conn. – Easton’s Chris Thomas won his age group and finished ninth overall in the Endrafit Ironman 70.3 Eagleman triathlon Sunday in Cambridge, Md. The race is one of five 70.3-mile races that are qualifiers for the Ironman World Championships later this year. Thomas was the third amateur and won his 40-44 age group by more than 5 minutes. The race also feature professional athletes. Thomas finished in 4:06.3 for the race, which consists of a 1.2-mile swim, a 56-mile bike ride and a 13.1-mile run. Young Norwalk Wrestlers Watch Team USA in N.Y. NORWALK, Conn. – Wrestlers and coaches from the Norwalk Mad Bull wrestling team visited New York last week to watch the United States wrestling team take on Russia. Westport Teen Wins Age Group in Triathlon WESTPORT, Conn. – Westport’s Marcus Russi won his age group for the second straight year Sunday in the Trifitness Seaside Sprint Triathlon in Bridgeport. Russi, 16, finished seventh overall in 59:12.7. Coming off a strong season for the Staples track team, Russi posted the fastest time in the 5K, the last leg of the three-sport event. He ran 18:15, an average of 5:53 per mile.  North Woods of Westport, a teammate of Russi's on the Staples swim team, finished second in the 14-19 age group.
