Norwalk-Based Girls Crew Wins Gold in N.J. Regatta NORWALK, Conn. -  Connecticut Boat Club’s Varsity 8+ held off a strong field to win the gold medal Saturday in the Mercer Sprints Regatta in New Jersey. The Norwalk-based team finished the 2,000-meter course in 6:24.33 to win the Casperson Challenge Cup. Mount Saint Joseph of Philadelphia took second in 6:24.66. Staples Girls Track Runs Unbeaten Streak to 5-0 WESTPORT, Conn. – The Staples High girls track team improved to 5-0 Monday by sweeping a tri-meet with Trumbull and Bridgeport Central. Staples defeated Central, 140-0, and edged Trumbull, 78-67. The girls will have their final home meet of the season Monday against Danbury and Ridgefield. They will be raising money for the American Cancer Society and will be selling luminaria bags in memory of those who have battled cancer. Geithner, Allen Pace Field in Greenwich Race OLD GREENWICH, Conn. – Peter Geithner ran away from the rest of the field of 296 finishers and Tara Allen was the female champion during the recent B*Cured Point Perspective at Tod's Point in Old Greenwich. The 5-kilometer (3.1-mile) Point Perspective cross country race through roads and trails was the opening event in the Volvo of Stamford Greenwich Cup series of 10 races. There was also an accompanying Kids Half Mile race in which 89 youngsters participated. New Canaan Woman Blasts First Collegiate Homer NEW CANAAN, Conn. – Freshman Lindsey Schmid of New Canaan hit her first collegiate home run for the Babson College softball team in a 5-2 win against Lesley College last week in Babson Park, Mass. Schmid’s blast came in the first game of a doubleheader, and Babson won the nightcap, 14-1. The victories came in a seven-game win streak for Babson, which finished 23-16 during the regular season. Babson earned the No. 2 seed in the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference playoffs, which open Tuesday. Schmid has played in 19 games and started 11 for Babson.
