Sports Writer Aims for Second Boston Marathon FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. – My journey to the Boston Marathon began back in 1974, when I ran for the junior high track team. It was the 880 then, a half-mile, before everything was converted to metric. The year and the yardage are dead giveaways that I’m old and that I’ve been at this for a long time. Monday’s 26.2-mile race will be my 10th marathon and my third in Boston. In 2002, in ideal conditions, my net time was 3:23:08, one of my best ever races. Westport Weston Y Swimmers Shine WESTPORT, Conn. — The Westport Weston Family Y Water Rat swim team had several strong performances at the New England Championships in Harvard University's Blodgett Pool. The Water Rats were well-represented, with 44 swimmers competing in the 12-and-under age groups. There were 70 YMCAs represented at the meet.  The 11- and 12-year-old age group started the meet and set the tempo for a great championship. Norwalk-Based Diving Team Heads to Nationals FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. – Eight young divers from Norwalk-based Next Generation Diving will compete at the YMCA Nationals beginning April 20 in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. Next Gen’s divers include Weston’s Liam Simmons and Hannah Schroeder, Stamford’s Declan Rowley, Fairfield’s Robert McCrory, Michael Connelly and Kelsey Tague, New Haven's Kevin Jimenez-Cowell and Southbury's Jessica Horn. Darien Piranhas Cruise at New England Swim Meet DARIEN, Conn. — The 12-and-under Darien YMCA Piranhas finished out the short-course season with a trip to Boston for the New England YMCA Championships. Tennis Hall of Famer Joins New Stamford Club STAMFORD, Conn. – Gigi Fermandez, a member of the International Tennis Hall of Fame and formerly ranked No. 1 in the world, has been named the director of tennis at Chelsea Piers Connecticut. The sports facility is scheduled to open in June in Stamford. During her 14-year career, Fernandez won 17 grand slam doubles crowns, as well as two Olympic gold medals. Fernandez was Puerto Rico’s first professional female athlete and coach of the year in Puerto Rico in 2003. Campbell, who rowed for New Canaan crew out of the Norwalk-based Maritime Rowing Club, and Daly have one more hurdle to clear to make the Summer Olympics in London.
