Fairfield Author Signs New Book on Basketball FAIRFIELD, Conn. Fairfield author Don Harrison will sign copies of his new book, Hoops in Connecticut: The Nutmeg States Passion for Basketball, on Saturday, Dec. 10, from 1-4 p.m. at the new Fairfield University Bookstore. The book is a compact history of Connecticut basketball that covers outstanding high school teams, college teams and the 33 state natives who have played in the NBA. Penn State's Redd Earns Big 10 Honors NORWALK, Conn. Norwalks Silas Redd, a sophomore running back at Penn State, earned second team All-Big 10 honors on Monday. Redd played in high school at King in Stamford. Redd rushed for 1,207 yards in 12 games for the Nittany Lions and scored seven touchdowns. Penn State (9-3) finished the regular season Saturday with a 45-7 loss to Wisconsin. The Nittany Lions will learn this week where they will play in a bowl game. Explosive Offenses Meet in Football Playoff NEW CANAAN, Conn. Two high-powered offenses square off Tuesday night when New Canaan meets New London in the quarterfinals of the Class L football tournament. Kickoff is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. in New London. The Rams (9-1) have scored 373 points this season, while New London has compiled 359. Each team has put 40 or more points on the board five times this season. Rugby Shows Its Strength at Darien Scrimmage DARIEN, Conn. Connor McCarthy looked around at the nearly 40 rugby players Saturday at Darien High School and was astonished. Its impressive, said McCarthy, who plays at Miami University in Ohio with his brother, Sam. Interest certainly seems to be growing. Runners Start to Look Ahead to New Year FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. The fall running season has come and gone for most Fairfield County runners, with only a few races remaining for the December diehards. One of the winters most popular series, the Boston Buildup, started online registration for its series of four races. The series begins with a 10k on Jan. 8 at Brien McMahon High School. The series also included a 15k, 20k and 25K. Runners can register online. Runners who remain competitive through December can race in a 5K on Saturday in Trumbull. Former Warde Star Nets Career High at Hartford FAIRFIELD, Conn. Former Fairfield Warde basketball star Daphne Elliott tied her career high last week with a 21-point performance to lead the University of Hartfords womens basketball team to a 64-60 victory over Texas Christian University. The game was part of the University of Central Florida Thanksgiving Classic in Orlando. Elliott played 31 minutes and connected on 6-for-14 from the floor and 7-of-8 from the foul line. Norwalk Rower Decides on Duke NORWALK, Conn. Alex Stonehill kicked and chased soccer balls for recreational teams until her freshman year in high school, when she turned to rowing. She was a natural on the water, and it made her realize soccer was not her sport.
