Runners Get Ready for State Open Meet FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. Dariens boys and Wiltons girls will be among the teams to watch Tuesday as runners from across Connecticut meet for the State Open cross country championships at Hammonasset Beach State Park in Madison. Both teams won championships in class meets Oct. 30. Darien, which went undefeated during the Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference regular season, ran away with the Class L championship. Norwalk Woman Runs NYC Marathon, Helps Others NORWALK, Conn. Norwalks Shannon Whipple was one of the many runners from the area who competed the ING New York City Marathon on Sunday. Whipple, 33, ran for Team Hole in the Wall and finished in 3:56:20, just under her goal of four hours. People can support Whipple here. Wilton Wahoos Honored at State Banquet WILTON, Conn. The Wilton Y Wahoos were recognized for many achievements at Connecticut Swimming's annual awards banquet. In all, 98 Wahoos were honored for academic achievements and/or top 16-ranking swims. Selection of the Top 16 is based upon swimmers who post the 16 fastest times in the state in each age group and individual events during the short-course and long-course seasons. Stamford Woman Helps Families Fighting Cancer STAMFORD, Conn. Michele Carluccis husband Peter fought acute leukemia for two years until losing the battle in June 2010. The two-year financial burden of traveling and staying in Boston for treatments spurred Carlucci, a Stamford native, to establish Whiteys Fund to help families facing similar circumstances. She organized the first annual Whiteys Fund Walk last Sunday in Stamford. The turnout was limited after the October snowstorm. McMahon Senior Wins State Heisman Award NORWALK, Conn. Brien McMahon High School senior Chris Madaffari was named Saturday as the boys winner of the Connecticut Wendys High School Heisman Award. Jennifer Mears of Vernon won the girls award. The Heisman Award recognizes the students work and dedication through their achievements in athletics, academics and community/school leadership. Wilton Man 2nd Among State Runners in NYC Marathon FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. Wiltons Jeff Ragazzini finished second among Connecticut men in Sundays ING New York City Marathon. Ragazzini ran 2:38:44 and was 115th overall in a field of over 40,000 runners. Ragazzini is a 2007 graduate of Wilton High School who also competed at Tufts University. The top Connecticut male was Thomas Holowka, who finished 93rd overall in 2:36:37. Stamfords Jeff Watson ran 2:47.57, and was also among the top runners from Connecticut. Staples Soccer Players Win Good Sport Award WESTPORT, Conn. The Staples boys soccer team was awarded the Southwest District Officials Sportsmanship Award for 2011. This is a huge honor, Staples coach Dan Woog said. Some people think sportsmanship awards are given as consolation prizes to winless teams. Norwalk 4th-Graders Win League Title NORWALK, Conn. The Norwalk Packers 4th graders dominated Shelton in the first half of Sundays Colonial Football League championship game even if their tenuous 13-12 lead did not reflect that. The second half, however, was a different story. Jakari Walker ran for two touchdowns and Ras Fisher recovered two fumbles and raced 81 yards for a touchdown as the Packers prevailed, 31-12. Young Westport Ballplayers Win Fall Championship WESTPORT, Conn. - The Westport-based Connecticut Seals 11-and-under baseball team won the East Shore Travel League fall championship. The Seals battled from behind in the semifinals to beat a tough Trumbull Titan team, 8-7. In the championship game, the Seals took control immediately by scoring 11 runs in the bottom of the first inning on its way to a mercy shortened victory against the BTL Tides. The U11 squad finished the season 14-1-1.

Runners Go to Bat for Brain Cancer Research GREENWICH, Conn. Three runners from Greenwich are running in the ING New York City Marathon on Sunday for Team B*CURED, which raises money for brain cancer research. They are part of a 10-runner team that has raised nearly $60,000 for the charity. Marathoners Mike Duda, Dick Taggart and Tara Allen joined more than 40,000 runners at the Verrazano Narrows Bridge on Sunday morning for the start of the race, which traverses through the five boroughs of New York.
