Rosales, Turner Lead Norwalk Cross Country Runners NORWALK, Conn. Norwalk's Edwin Rosales finished 16th and Claire Turner finished 18th to lead the Bears in a cross country race Tuesday at Staples High School. Both Norwalk teams were swept in team scoring as they faced some of the toughest teams in the Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference. The boys lost to Danbury, 15-48; to Staples, 19-40; and to Darien, 15-49, The girls lost to Darien, 15-50; Danbury, 15-49; and Staples, 16-47. Fairfield Pop Warner Gets Bleachers FAIRFIELD, Conn. ? Fairfield Pop Warner Football and Cheerleading, along with the Town of Fairfield, have received new bleachers at Sullivan Field on Old Dam Road, courtesy of Sports Image. The bleacher project started as an agreement between Fairfield Pop Warner Football and Cheerleading and Sports Image, which was responsible for all aspects of the venture (with installation help from Fairfield Parks and Recreation). Darien 6th Grade Wave Suffers 3rd Straight Loss DARIEN, Conn. The Darien 6th grade Wave football team lost a hard-fought battle Saturday to Fairfield, 7-0, in a Fairfield County Football League game. It was the third straight 7-0 setback for Darien, the previous loses being to Wilton and Ridgefield. Fairfield Mariners Play for Senior League Title The defending champion Fairfield Mariners will meet the Monroe Top Hats in a best-of-three series this weekend for the Fairfield County Men's Senior Baseball League championship. The Stamford Phillies and Westport Cardinals will meet in the President's Cup finals this weekend, also in a best-of-three playoff. The Mariners advanced by beating the Bridgeport Brewers in the semifinals. The Top Hats swept the New Canaan Cannons, 7-0 and 5-0, to reach the finals. Darien Girls Sweep Cross Country Meet DARIEN, Conn. Darien's Grace Loh finished first to lead the Blue Wave girls cross country team to a sweep in a meet Tuesday at Staples. Danbury and Norwalk also ran in the race. Darien, 4-0, won a close meet with Danbury, 24-31. The Blue Wave had an easier time against Staples, winning 19-40, and beat Norwalk, 16-47. Staples Runner Wins With a Kick at the Finish WESTPORT, Conn. Staples junior Henry Wynne trailed Danbury's Nick Carlsen by just a stride as they approached the final 300 meters of Tuesday's Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference cross country race at Staples High School. It was right where Wynne wanted to be. Using the speed that made him one of the state's top runners in the 1,600 last spring, Wynne easily overtook Carlsen and won the 5K in 16:12. Darien Boys Outrun Danbury in Cross Country DARIEN, Conn. The Danbury High School boys cross country team has been the gold standard for many years in the Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference. But Darien showed Tuesday it might be on the verge of changing that. The Blue Wave beat the Hatters for the first time since 2004 with a resounding 20-41 victory at Staples High School. Norwalk Sonics Soccer Team Nips Fairfield NORWALK, Conn. The Norwalk Junior Soccer Association Sonics, a U13 girls travel team, scored a 1-0 victory over Fairfield Lightning Sunday. In the first half, the Sonics dominated the action at times, but kept getting stonewalled by the Fairfield goalie and defense. After nearly 15 minutes of action, Sonics forward Christy Russo finally broke through and rifled a shot that found the upper-right corner of the net. Kids Triathlon Draws a Strong Field WESTPORT, Conn. Children from Westport, Weston and several other nearby towns swam, rode and ran Sunday in the second annual Strong Kids Triathlon. The event at Staples High School benefitted the Westport Weston Family Y's annual Strong Kids campaign, which allows the Y to fulfill its charitable mission. Kids competed in two age groups. The 6-9-year-old boys and girls swam 75 meters, rode a 1 ¼-mile bike loop and finished with a half-mile run. Kids ages 10-and-up swam 150 meters, rode for 2 ½ miles and finished with a 1-mile run. Wilton Cyclist Wins Greenwich Race GREENWICH, Conn. Daniel Fox of Wilton won the Volvo of Stamford Tour de Greenwich XXVII, a 20-mile bicycle race, Sunday morning at Greenwich High School. Fox, 45, got his front tire to the line first to win a tight finish among the top three racers. Fox had a time of 48:49.15, runner-up Matt Armstrong of Cos Cob had 48:49.40 and Wilton's Carlos Restrepo placed third with a 48:49.84. Fox won with an average speed of 24.58 miles per hour.
