Cheerleading School Goes for a Winning Curriculum NORWALK, Conn. The Norwalk-based Xtreme Cheer team is rolling into a new season with additional programs, teams and classes. Children of all ages, moms and even post-college cheerleaders can take advantage of the additional sessions. "We're always looking at new programs and new classes,'' said Dana Talbot, who runs Xtreme with her husband, Mike. "We want to be known as a good training program for cheerleaders, but we also want to be known as a place that's safe for kids [where] they're in good hands." Prep Runner Paces Junior Varsity Pack FAIRFIELD, Conn. Fairfield Prep sophomore James Mulliken won the junior varsity race Saturday at the Wilton Invitational, one of many outstanding runs on the day for the Jesuit runners. Mulliken covered the 3.15-mile course in 18:56, an average of 6:01 per mile. His victory matched that of teammate Connor Rog, who won the varsity race. Prep won the team title among the large schools and also took the junior varsity team crown, outdistancing runner-up Guilford by 21 points. Norwalk Man Wins Ridgefield Duathlon Norwalk's Eneas Freyre won Ridgefields Simply Du It Duathlon, taking just over one hour to complete the Sunday run-bike-run event. He led a field of 144 finishers. Freyre, who owns Targetraining in Westport, finished in 1:00:21.352. The race consisted of a 2.5-mile run, a 13-mile ride and a 2.5-mile run. It was Freyre's last competition before the Duathlon World Championships Saturday in Spain. Freyre's victory capped a strong day by athletes from Main Street Connecticut communities. Golfer from Darien Club Takes First Step Toward Pro Tour STAMFORD, Conn. Mike Ballo Jr. took the first step toward joining the PGA Tour last week in a qualifying tournament in Dade City, Fla. The Stamford golfer, who turned professional last year and plays out of Woodway Country Club in Darien, finished tied for fourth in a PGA Tour pre-qualification tournament in Dade City. Ballo advances to the first qualifying stage, which will be played in October. Ballo has not yet been told where he will compete in the next round. Winter Leads Barlow Girls in Cross Country Meet WILTON, Conn. The Joel Barlow girls cross country team ran in the Wilton Invitational meet Saturday, paced by captain Emily Winter. The meet drew 22 teams from around the state. Winter placed 13th out of 122 runners in the varsity race. Caitlin Neary was the second Barlow finisher, running 25th. Wilton Freshman Paces Pack in Boys Race WILTON, Conn. Wilton's Spencer Brown won the freshmen boys race Saturday at the Wilton Invitational, covering the 1.5-mile distance in 7:41. Brown was three seconds ahead of Darien's Alex Ostberg. Brown and Ostberg ran together for most of the race before Brown pulled away over the final 400 yards. Brown and Ostberg are former teammates at the Wilton Running Club. Brown is off to a fast start for the Warriors, after finishing second in the team's first meet of the season in a race against Danbury, Harding, Ludlowe and Ridgefield. Darien 3rd in Its Class at Cross Country Meet DARIEN, Conn. Sophomore Brian Davey finished 20th Saturday to pace Darien High School runners in the Wilton Invitational. He covered the 3.15-mile course in 18:10 to help the Blue Wave to a third place finish in the small schools division of the meet. Jack Sparkman was Darien's second runner in 18:28, followed by Colten Appleby (18:34), Andrew Xigon (18:55) and Sean Lee. New Canaan Runner 8th at Wilton Invitational NEW CANAAN, Conn. New Canaan's Alex Spinu finished eighth overall to lead the Rams to a fourth place team finish Saturday in the small schools division of the Wilton Invitational. Spinu covered the 3.15-mile course in 17:25. The girls team finished sixth and were led by Elizabeth Perry. She finished the 2.8-mile course in 19:46 and finished 39th overall. Barlow Runner 3rd at Wilton Race WILTON, Conn. Joel Barlow High School runner Logan Fulton finished third in Saturdays Wilton Invitational cross country race at Allens Meadow. Fulton covered the 3.15-mile distance in 16:53. Connor Rog of Fairfield Prep won the race in 15:53, followed by Westons David Stankiewicz in 16:50. Barlow finished fifth among small schools. Westhill Girl Wins Freshmen Race at Wilton Meet STAMFORD, Conn. Westhill's Alison Ambrosecchio won the freshmen race Saturday at the Wilton Invitational in Allen's Meadow. Ambrosecchio finished the 1.5-mile course in 9:24, pulling away from Greenwich's Jennifer Grogin in the final stages to win by 12 seconds. Bethel's Halle Valenti finished third.
