Young Darien Players Tackle New Season DARIEN, Conn. -- Several teams from Darien play their season openers in the Fairfield County Football League on Saturday. The Darien White fifth graders, coached by Todd Herget Jr., play New Canaan at 5 p.m. at Dunning Field. Westport, Stamford Host Weekend Races The final race of the Westport Summer Series on Saturday and a 5K run in Stamford on Monday are among the local running options in Fairfield County this weekend. Many runners will also head up the coast to compete in the New Haven Road Race, which includes a 20K and a 5K. In Westport, Staples High School will host a 10-mile run Saturday at 8 a.m. in the concluding event of the 10-race series. New Canaan Football Builds Strong Foundation NEW CANAAN, Conn. Rod Fox doesn't emphasize winning with his football team in New Canaan. Still, the victories have rolled in over the past five years for two eighth grade teams in the Fairfield County Football League. Fox's Black team, which he coaches with David Jahns, went 9-0 last season and outscored opponents 214-73. The Red team, coached by Mike Cognetta and Brian Hetherington, went 10-0 with seven shutouts. New Canaan Rower Finishes 4th at World Meet NEW CANAAN, Conn. New Canaan's Andrew Campbell finished fourth Friday in the lightweight singles sculls at the World Rowing Championships in Bled, Slovenia. Campbell, a sophomore at Harvard University, had been hoping for his second international medal of the summer. He finished the 2,000-meter course in 7:06.64. Campbell, who had the second fastest time in qualifying, held medal position until the final few strokes of the race, according to the USRowing website. Young Fairfield Players Tackle New Season FAIRFIELD, Conn. Youth football kicks off for Fairfield teams in the Fairfield County Football League on Saturday. Westport Boy Talks With Tiger WESTPORT, Conn. -- Westport's Adam Friedman met professional golfer Tiger Woods earlier this month at a tournament in Akron, Ohio. Adam worked as a volunteer during the World Golf Championship-Bridgestone Invitational. He met and had his picture taken with several professional golfers. Adam is also a golfer and competes in junior tournaments sponsored by the Metropolitan PGA. He also plays for Westport in the Fairfield County Basketball League. Follow us on Facebook!

Young Westport Players Tackle New Season WESTPORT, Conn. -- Football players in the Westport Police Athletic League tuned up for the opening day of the Fairfield County Football League season with workouts this week at Romano Field. Sports Group Announces Fairfield County Honorees The Fairfield County Sports Commission has named its 2011 Sports Persons of the Year in each of the 15 communities it serves. The local sports honorees will be recognized at the annual Sports Night awards dinner to be held at 6 p.m. Monday, Oct. 17, at the Hyatt Regency Greenwich. In each of the 15 communities, a committee led by a local town representative of the commission selected a Sports Person of the Year. Fairfield County Rowers Post Mixed Results Rowers on the U.S. team from Fairfield County had mixed results Thursday in the World Rowing Championships in Bled, Slovenia. New Canaan's Andrew Campbell and Weston's Nick LaCava advanced to the finals in their events, while Norwalk's Dan Walsh suffered through a disappointing day in rowing's signature event. Campbell, a sophomore at Harvard, finished second in the lightweight men's single. He finished in 7:12.86, about five seconds behind winner Henrik Stephansen of Denmark.
