Shippan Racquet Club Team Heads to Nationals STAMFORD, Conn. A Stamford women's tennis team is going to Nationals. Love 50, a senior women's 3.5 USTA team based out of Shippan Racquet Club, won the New England Sectional Championships last month at Mount Holyoke College in South Hadley, Mass. They defeated fellow Shippan Racquet Club team No Excuses by 2-1 in the championship final, prevailing on the deciding court by 10-5 in a match tiebreaker that was used instead of a third set. Sports Group Announces Fairfield County Honorees The Fairfield County Sports Commission has named its 2011 Sports Persons of the Year in each of the 15 communities it serves. The local sports honorees will be recognized at the annual Sports Night awards dinner to be held at 6 p.m. Monday, Oct. 17, at the Hyatt Regency Greenwich. In each of the 15 communities, a committee led by a local town representative of the commission selected a Sports Person of the Year. Westport Teen Triathlete Qualifies for World Race WESTPORT, Conn. Westport teenager Marcus Russi qualified for the International Triathlon Union World Sprint Championships after finishing eighth in the recent U.S. Age Group National Championships. Russi, 15, will be among the U.S. delegation competing in the ITU race in the fall of 2012 in Auckland, New Zealand. Big Field To Set Sail in Vineyard Race STAMFORD, Conn. New Canaan's Diane McKeever made it her mission to increase the number of vessels in the Stamford Yacht Club's Vineyard Race. She has achieved her objective with 93 boats registered for the race, which begins Friday in Stamford. Crews from Stamford, Darien, New Canaan, Norwalk, Greenwich, Westport, Southport, Wilton, Fairfield, Bedford and Mamaroneck will be among the contestants. Longtime Fans Give Three Cheers for Three D's STAMFORD, Conn. Hours before Hurricane Irene slammed into Stamford, nearly 200 followers of the former Three Ds Café jammed the danced floor and partied with friends in the cafés second annual reunion at Zodys 19th Hole last Friday. Three Ds was one of Stamfords most popular establishments from 1976 to 1992. Norwalk's Rebecca Link and Stamford's Richard Greenbaum and Tyler Pomerance were among the winners in a United States Tennis Association Level 7 Tournament held at Norwalk High School. The men play their regular season opener on Nov. 11 against Columbia, and the women open Nov. 13 against Holy Cross. Norwalk Rower's Crew Fails to Reach Final NORWALK, Conn. Norwalk's Dan Walsh and the United States Men's 8 failed to advance out of their semifinal Wednesday in the World Rowing Championships in Bled, Slovenia.
