Softball, Volleyball Postponed in Norwalk NORWALK, Conn. As clean up continues following Hurricane Irene, games in softball in the Norwalk Recreation and Parks softball and volleyball leagues scheduled for Monday and have been postponed. According to a note on the Recreation and Parks website, games will be played on Wednesday if the fields can be made playable. Teams who play Wednesday will be notified if there are further delays. Madaffari, Heaphy Win Lightfoot Race NORWALK, Conn. Before Hurricane Irene hit town on Sunday, Brien McMahon High School senior Chris Madaffari and Norwalk woman Julie Heaphy ran away from the field in warm, muggy conditions at the 34th annual Norwalk Lightfoot Summer Series 11-mile race. Madaffari, tuning up for the high school cross country season, covered the distance in 1:06.46. He was followed across the finish line by Darien's Jeff Zarrilli in 1:08.55 and Yee-Ning Cheng of Norwalk, who raan 1:12.38. Heaphy won the women's race in 1:12.56. New Canaan Rower Wins Opening Race at World Meet New Canaan rower Andrew Campbell got the United States off to a good start Sunday at the World Rowing Championships, winning his heat in the lightweight mens single sculls in Bled, Slovenia. Campbell, a 19-year-old sophomore-to-be at Harvard, advanced to Thursdays semifinals. The result also spared him an extra race on the way to the final. Irene Bring Floods to Bell Island DARIEN, Conn. Bell Island in Darien was one of the areas hit hardest by floodwaters from Tropical Storm Irene on Sunday. Wahoos Swimmer Kicks It Up a Notch WILTON, Conn. Wilton Wahoo swimmer Katy Luchansky will remember the summer of 2011 as her breakout season. In the YMCA Long Course National Championships earlier this month at Georgia Tech, Luchansky had four top-four finishes in individual events. Saugatuck Rowers Celebrate 2nd Place at Masters WESTPORT, Conn. Saugatuck Rowing Club lost a seven-year stranglehold on the USRowing Masters title at the championships, but coach Costel Mutescu could not have been more proud of his team. Minneapolis Rowing ended Saugatuck's run, amassing 552 points to 488.25 for the Westport-based team earlier this month. The meet was held in Oklahoma City and Saugatuck had 33 athletes compared with 80 when it won the title last year. So Mutescu knew it would be hard for his team to repeat. Rowers Start World Championships On the side of the globe, rowers from Fairfield County will take to the water in Bled, Slovenia, in the World Rowing Championships. New Canaan's Andrew Campbell is the first local rower to compete Sunday in the lightweight men's single sculls. Norwalk Saturday Afternoon Practices Canceled The Central Office for Norwalk Public Schools has officially announced that all practices will be canceled as of noon Saturday because of the bad weather as Hurricane Irene approaches. Hurricane Irene Cancels Women's Triathlon NORWALK, Conn. A women's triathlon and duathlon scheduled to debut Sunday at Norwalk's Calf Pasture Park has been canceled due to Hurricane Irene. The race is Irene's first recreational sports casualty in Fairfield County. Women who have already registered for the event are being given three options: roll over the registration until next year, receive a 50 percent refund or donate 80 percent of the entry fee to TeamBrent, the race's charity benefit. Fairfield County Women Grab Top 10 Golf Honors Alicia Dibos of Old Greenwich finished third while Susan Ginter of Rolling Hills of Wilton took fourth in the championship flight of the LPGA Teaching and Club Pros championship on Wednesday at The Golf Club at Balllantyne in North Carolina. Fairfield's Angela Aulenti, the head pro at Sterling Farms in Stamford, finished tied for seventh in the senior division.
