UConn Football Game Awaits Re-Scheduling The University of Connecticut's home football opener scheduled for Thursday against Fordham was postponed Tuesday. As of Wednesday at noon, the game had not been re-scheduled. UConn officials said they were hopeful the game would be played Saturday. UConn's home field, Rentschler Field, is currently being used by the Connecticut National Guard for use as a commodities distribution center to assist communities in need of supplies in the wake of Tropical Storm Irene. Vineyard Veteran Sets Sail for Another Race DARIEN, Conn. Geoff Beringer looks forward to competing in the Stamford Yacht Club's Vineyard Race every year. He has raced in the event, which begins Friday, for nine years and is looking forward to the 238-mile race from Stamford to Buzzards Bay, Mass. "I enjoy the distance races,'' said Beringer, a Darien resident who sails out of the Norwalk Yacht Club. "I like the races in the Stamford series." Mom of Newborn Triplets Triumphs in Triathlon STAMFORD, Conn. Some three months after giving birth to triplets, Stamford's Megan Kelly lead Connecticut women finishers in the U.S. Triathlon Age Group championships earlier this month in Burlington, Vt. "When I found out I was pregnant, I wanted to have some sort of goal,'' said Kelly, who delivered her babies on May 2. "I wanted to do something I knew I could manage. Norwalk Junior Soccer Kicks Off Sept. 10 NORWALK, Conn. The Norwalk Junior Soccer Association kicks off its season Sept. 10. The league is for boys and girls ages 3 to 14. They play a 10-week season with games between 9 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. on Saturday mornings at West Rocks Middle School. Players can find out more registration details on the league's website. Lake Club Swimmers Win Division Title WILTON, CONN. The Lake Club swim team finished the season with a big splash, winning its divisional championship and placing third in the county-wide championships. After a 4-2 dual meet season, Lake Club impressively won the Fairfield County Swimming League Division II title at Shore & Country Club. It went on to place third out of 32 teams in the FCSL County Championships held at Roxbury Swim and Tennis Club in Stamford. Cross County Series Finale On at Waveny Park NEW CANAAN, Conn. The final race of the New Canaan summer cross country series will step off Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Waveny Park. Runners will race approximately 2.3 miles in the Luminaria Loop, in which runners finish on a path outlined by candles. The park suffered some fallen trees and limbs during Hurricane Irene. Fortt Moves to Middle Linebacker at Penn State STAMFORD, Conn. Stamford High grad Khairi Fortt is listed as the second-string middle linebacker for the Penn State football team as it prepares for its season opener Saturday against Indiana State. The switch to the middle is a surprise for Penn State observers, who have seen Fortt play primarily on the outside. Freyre, Herbert Beat Field and Irene at Westport WESTPORT, Conn. Norwalk's Eneas Freyre was in a hurry Saturday. The Norwalk triathlete had biked to Compo Beach to run the Westport Road Runners 9.3 mile run at Compo Beach, and was scheduled to teach a class at Target Training right after. Plus, there was the little matter of Hurricane Irene looming over the procedings. Freyre made short work of the compeititon, finishing in 52:52, nearly three minutes ahead of runner-up Luke McCambley of Westport. New Canaan Man Ruled Road to Win Triathlon Title NEW CANAAN, Conn. New Canaan's Eben Jones ran to victory in the 50-54-year-old division of the USA Triathlon Age Group National Championships in Burlington, Vt. He was hoping it wouldn't come to that. "I thought for me to have any chance I had to have a lead off the bike,'' Jones said. "But I actually ran very well for me and passed the guy in the lead (for his age group) at the 4.5 mile mark of the run."
