Westport Women Play in Member-Guest WESTPORT, Conn. -- The Longshore Women's Golf Association held its 51st annual member-guest tournament. Chairwoman Audrey Hertzel and her committee organized the event and members decorated every tee for the event, and they all represented the "America the Beautiful" theme. Each tee was decorated by a member and some examples of the theme were the Gettysburg Address, hot dogs, baseball and the Statue of Liberty. On the second hole, there was a Ford Focus to be given by Stamford Ford-Lincoln for anyone who got a hole-in-one, but no golfer won the big prize. The day started with an elaborate …

Westport Leads Racing Options This Weekend WESTPORT, Conn. Runners, cyclists and swimmers had a smorgasbord of options last weekend. Racing opportunities over the next few days are limited to a Saturday morning run in Westport. The third race of the Westport Summer Series begins at 8 a.m. at Longshore. It is 3.8 miles. David Mortner of Westport won last week's 3.04-mile race, and Amy Bevilaqua made history in the first race of the series by becoming the first woman to win, when she captured a 2.17-mile race. Riptide Shoots for State Softball Title NORWALK, Conn. The Norwalk Riptide softball team reached the New England Regional Tournament last year in the 12-year-old division. The team coached by Wally Hurd begins its postseason journey this year in the 14-and-under division Friday in the Babe Ruth state tournament in New Milford. Former Stag Joins Norwalk Basketball Staff NORWALK, Conn. Kevin George developed a winning basketball team as the coach of a seventh-grade Darien squad in the Fairfield County Basketball League. Now, the former Fairfield University player will help Tom Keyes bring that winning attitude to Norwalk High School. George will be the junior varsity coach and top assistant to Keyes, who was named Norwalk's new head coach in May. Stamford Rookie Legion Looks to State Its Case STAMFORD, Conn. A four-game losing streak near the end of the postseason may have been the best alarm clock for the Stamford American Legion Rookie baseball team. Westport 10s Open With Section 1 Win WESTPORT, Conn. The Westport All-Stars defeated Orange, 21-3, in the opener of the Section 1 Little League 10-year-old tournament Wednesday in Naugatuck. Wilton Runners Sparkle at Junior Olympics WILTON, Conn. The Wilton Running Club's 4x100 girls relay team qualified for the national championships by winning gold at the Region 1 Junior Olympic Championships. The club sent 10 athletes to the event at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, N.Y., last Saturday.
