Stamford Junior Legion Rips Westport STAMFORD, Conn. The Stamford American Legion Junior team defeated Westport, 15-2, Wednesday to improve to 16-3 on the season. Stamford leads the Connecticut American Legion Zone 4 standings. Peter Dawson won his fourth consecutive start, pitching six innings while striking out six. Stamford jumped out to an early lead, taking advantage of some errors by Westport. Stamford took a 5-0 lead into the fifth and broke it open with seven runs. Darien 13s Reach District Finals DARIEN, Conn. -- The Darien Babe Ruth 13-year-old All-Stars advanced to the District 1 finals with a 16-4 win over Stamford Wednesday night. The game was shortened to five innings due to the mercy rule. Darien's 14-hit attack was led by Jamie Schofield (single, double, triple), Andrew Enzor (three singles), Tyler Costantino (single, double), Stephen Barston (two singles), and Michael O'Malley (triple, three RBIs). Unbeaten Teams Meet in District 1 Playoffs Two-time defending District 1 champion North Stamford meets undefeated National Lione Thursday at Springdale as the tournament heads into the final games of pool play. Both teams advanced to the sectional by winning district titles earlier this week. Darien, which is managed by Chris Lopiano, meets District 3 winner Seymour Thursday at Unity Field No. 2 at 5:30. Darien Ballplayers Meet Down Under Squad DARIEN, Conn. The Darien 13-and-under Babe Ruth All-Stars hosted a youth baseball program from Australia, the Perth Heat, on Saturday at Darien High School. The Heat arrived in the United States last week and attended the Yankees-Brewers game at Yankee Stadium. They plan to play about 30 games over the next three weeks, making stops in Boston, Pittsburgh, Delaware and New Jersey before returning to Perth, Australia, on July 25. Soccer Pioneer Left Mark on Westport WESTPORT, Conn. Dan Woog didn't hesitate when talking about Albie Loeffler's contributions to the Westport soccer community. Loeffler was named last week to the Fairfield County Sports Hall of Fame, and Woog said Loeffler would have not wanted the attention. "He would have been a lot uncomfortable,'' said Woog, the current boys soccer coach at Staples High. "Attention was not his thing. He deflected any kind of attention paid to him." Beachside Team Wins Regional Crown WESTPORT, Conn. Beachside Soccer Club under-12 coach Mark Alves admitted it looked bleak when his team fell behind by two goals in a shootout for the U.S. Youth Soccer Region 1 championship. But then goalie Tyler Dalton and the rest of the team went to work. Stamford U17 Legion Remains Hot STAMFORD, Conn. Wilton snapped Stamford American Legion's nine-game winning streak, but the under-17 team regained its winning ways with a win in the nightcap of a doubleheader to maintain first place in Zone 4. Stamford, 15-3, responded with a three-game winning streak heading into a game Wednesday at Westport. Wilton cooled off Stamford with a 9-6 victory.
