Triathletes Roll, Run and Swim in Norwalk NORWALK, Conn. Laura Cummings is a newcomer to triathlons. But after Sunday's victory in the Mossman Sprint Triathlon at Norwalk's Calf Pasture Beach, it's clear the 23-year-old from Bay Shore, N.Y., has a bright future in the sport. Cummings paced the women's field while Naugatuck's Tim Steiskal led the field in a race under gorgeous weather conditions. The athletes swam a half-mile, rode bikes for 12.5 miles and finished with a 3.1-mile run. Cummings completed the course in 1:09:44 and finished 42nd overall. District 1 Little League Teams Battle The District 1 Little League baseball tournament heads for its final rounds of pool play this weekend with two teams already qualified for next week's elimination round. Darien American and Wilton, who meet Saturday, have wrapped up spots in the semifinals. Both are 4-0 in the tournament, and the winner of Saturday's game will secure the No. 1 seed in Pool B. Grinalds Headed to World Championships Rosie Grinalds of Fairfield is headed back to the World Rowing Junior Championships. Grinalds and her partner, Corinne Bozzine, of the Norwalk-based Connecticut Boat Club won the women's pair trial Thursday and will compete next month in the world meet. Grinalds and Bozzini won a best-of-three trial against Saratoga Rowing Association's Lizzy Fitzhenry and Kristina Wagner. The Saratoga crew won Wednesday's opening race. Fairfield Wins, Darien Falls in Sectional Softball Fairfield won its opening game in the Section 1 Little League softball tournament while Darien lost in games Thursday at Unity Park in Trumbull. Fairfield defeated District 5 champion Bristol, 6-0, while Darien fell to District 3 champion Seymour, 15-3. Darien and Fairfield are scheduled to meet Friday at 5:50 p.m. at Unity. Run, Ride and Swim This Weekend Recreational athletes can run, swim and bike, sometimes in combination, in a busy weekend of races throughout Fairfield County. Triathletes young and old will do all three Saturday and Sunday at Calf Pasture Beach in Norwalk. The Mini Mossman Youth Triathlon begins at 9 a.m. on Saturday, while the Mossman Sprint Triathlon for adults goes off at 6:30 a.m. on Sunday. The Sunday race is sold out. Norwalk Riptide Blanks Danbury NORWALK, Conn. The Norwalk Riptide 14-and-under softball team defeated Danbury, 5-0, Thursday at Norwalk High School to improve to 6-1 in the Fairfield County Fastpitch Softball League. The Riptide also beat the Fairfield Fury, 5-1, on Wednesday and stands in second place in the FCFSL. They are one of several teams in the league with one loss. New Softball Team Takes Stamford by Storm STAMFORD, Conn. Stamford softball teams have developed a sterling reputation at the youth and high school levels. The first-year Stamford Storm and manager Brett Price hope the 12-year-old fast-pitch team can add to that luster. Price and the players parents sought a higher level of competition for the girls. Lione All-Stars Stop North Stamford STAMFORD, Conn. National Lione All-Star pitcher Jay DeVito was tired of losing to North Stamford. So Thursday night, he did something about it.
