Wildcats Win Softball Sectional NORWALK, Conn. The Wildcats softball team, which plays in the Norwalk Recreation Leagues, went 3-0 in the Amateur Softball Association tournament on Saturday to earn a berth in the upcoming state tournament. The Wildcats defeated the Titans, 17-2, the Gators, 7-1, and the Gators again in the championship, 13-3. The Gators finished second and the Bandits third in the tournament, with all the teams advancing to the state tournament in Branford. Darien 9 & 10 Girls Fall in District 1 Final DARIEN, Conn. The Darien 9- and 10-year-old softball All-Stars battled Redding/Easton through two tight games in the District 1 Little League tournament. Unfortunately for the Darien girls, Sunday's championship game had the same outcome as their first battle. Redding/Easton scored two runs in the top of the sixth inning and held on for a 9-8 win at Middlebrook School in Wilton. Cole Helps U.S. Rowers Take Bronze at World Meet NEW CANAAN, Conn. Charlie Cole of New Canaan competed in the U.S. Men's 4- at the Lucerne World Cup on Sunday, and in an exciting finish came home with a bronze medal. Charlie, an alum of New Canaan Crew and Yale Men's Rowing, teamed up with Scott Gault (Piedmont, Calif.), Brett Newlin (Riverton, Wyo.) and Giuseppe Lanzone (Annandale, Va.) and was among the leaders throughout the race. With Great Britain leading the entire race, the USA, Greece and Germany battled it out for the medals. Harvard Swimmer Connects With Kids at Newfield STAMFORD, Conn. Ryan Cutter honed his swimming skills at Stamford's Newfield Swim and Tennis Club. This summer, the Harvard junior is teaching kids who hope to follow in his footsteps. Cutter, a three-time All-State swimmer at Westhill High School, is an assistant coach for David Fine on the Newfield coaching staff. Redding/Easton Girls Win District 1 Title EASTON, Conn. The Redding/Easton 9- and 10-year-old softball team had been getting big hits throughout the District 1 Little League tournament. The Rockets entered the sixth inning of Sunday's championship game against Darien locked in a 7-7 game, and the Rockets again came through with clutch hits. Darien 13s Win First Babe Ruth Title in 42 Years DARIEN, Conn. It had been 42 years since a Darien team won a Babe Ruth District 1 championship. This years 13-year-old All-Stars may have put their pens and notebooks away for the summer, but that didnt stop them from re-writing history. Darien swept Stamford, 4-3 and 10-2, in the championship series to win its first District 1 title since 1969. The victory puts Darien into the state tournament beginning Saturday in Ridgefield. Stamford Advance in Little League Play National Lione and North Stamford secured the final two playoff spots in the District 1 Little League 12-year-old baseball tournament and will advance to Wednesday's semifinals. Lione, North Stamford and Redding finished tied atop Pool B with 5-1 records. Lione won the first tie-breaker on a run differential formula. Fairfield 10U Stars Win District Crown FAIRFIELD, Conn. The Fairfield 9- and 10-year-old softball team captured the District 2 championship Saturday with a 5-4 victory over Trumbull. Darien Football Goes 4-2 in Passing Tourney DARIEN, Conn. The Darien High School football team went 4-2 and reached the quarterfinals Saturday of the third annual Grip It and Rip It Passing Tournament at New Canaan High School. The tournament featured 23 teams in 7-on-7 passing drills and included teams from Connecticut and New York. Darien defeated Newtown, 14-7; Bridgeport Central and Cheshire, 28-13, in round-robin competition. It also lost to Norwalk, 13-6.
