Weston Girls Tennis Shoots for 5th Straight Title Weston's girls tennis will shoot for its fifth straight Class S championship when the Trojans open state competition Tuesday against Valley Regional. The Trojans won their fifth straight South-West Conference title last week with a 4-0 victory over Joel Barlow. Weston, 14-1, lost its first match of the season against Glastonbury, which snapped an 87-match winning streak. The Trojans are led by undefeated No. 1 singles player Kimmy Guerin, who has not dropped a set this season. In baseball, the Trojans travel to Enfield to play in the Class M tournament. Fairfield Teams Begin State Tournaments Teams from Fairfield Warde, Fairfield Ludlowe and Fairfield Prep begin state tournament action Tuesday. In baseball, Prep and Ludlowe will play in the Class LL tournament and Warde will play in Class L. Prep is seeded 12th and hosts No. 21 East Hartford at 3:30. Ludlowe is seeded 31st and meets No. 2 Pomperaug, also at 3:30. The 17th-seeded Mustangs travel to meet No. 16 Farmington at 3:30. Instant Replay stayed in first place in the Majors Division. The team, managed by Glen Colorassi, is 13-3 and owns a half-game lead over the Italian Center, which is 13-4. Instant Replay won three games over the weekend and has won five of its last six. It finishes the regular season on Thursday against First County Bank. Norwalk Teams Begin State Tournaments Norwalk and Brien McMahon face Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference rivals in baseball as state tournament action gets under way Tuesday. Norwalk hosts Greenwich at 3:30 p.m. at City Hall Field and the Senators entertain Stamford at 7 p.m. Norwalk eliminated McMahon in the first round of the FCIAC tournament last week. Norwalk lost in the semifinals. McMahon is seeded No. 3 while Norwalk is seeded 14th. Weston Girl Vaults to Top in New Arena Weston's Erica Litvak has soared through the air since she was a young girl. The sport in which she competes, however, has changed completely. Litvak won the South-West Conference championship last week in the pole vault. She is the top seed in the event for Wednesday's Class M championships and won the Class M indoor title in February. She was fifth in the State Open indoors and will continue her career in the fall at Villanova University. Women Get Cooking To Help Japan In the wake of the disaster in Japan, Angie Iida of New Canaan and Harumi Sasada of Greenwich knew they had to do something. So Iida, her mother Nu Hua Yang, a resident of Tokyo and Los Angeles, and their friend Sasada conducted several Japanese cooking classes to raise funds for the Japanese Disaster Relief Fund. They were held at Dede Barttlet's home in Greenwich in April and at Lisa Melland's home in New Canaan last week. Catch Darien's Lacrosse Champions in Action Darien defeated Ridgefield, 10-7, on Friday for its eighth Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference championship. Take a glance at some of the scenes from Friday's game. It was Darien's 12th league crown but first since 2008. Defenseman Eric Parnon had a goal and an assist and earned MVP honors for the Blue Wave. Darien now turns its attention to the Class M tournament, where it meets Notre Dame of West Haven on Wednesday in a first-round game. Darien has won five straight Class M championships. Runners Race to Support Wilton Schools There was lots of talking trash Sunday as runners gathered for the third annual Get Smart For Wilton 5k at the high school track. "There's no way you're beating me," or "I won't win this thing, but I will beat you." But it was all in good fun. Over 250 runners came out for the race, which benefits the Wilton school system. It is expected to generate about $5,000, which will go to the purchase of Smart Board technology, to be used where needed in art classrooms, and for the professional development of teachers.
