New Canaan Rower Balances Training, Teaching The coaching bug bit New Canaan's Nate Kelly hard. But Kelly, the assistant to Yan Vengerovskiy at the Norwalk-based Maritime Rowing Club, is not done competing. Thus, the 23-year-old St. Luke's and Trinity College graduate is faced with a balancing conundrum that is not easily solved. There are not enough hours in the day to train for a shot at making a national rowing team as well as to dedicate himself to the New Canaan girls crew team, which he coaches for Maritime. He squeezes each day like a lemon, getting the last drop of energy out of himself and his young rowers. "It makes for a f…

Longtime Stamford Coach Still Digs Little Leaguers For 45 years, Junie DeLeo's name has been attached to the Clairol team in the Springdale Little League. The maker of hair care products left the Stamford corporate scene last year. DeLeo, however, wouldn't think of managing a team with a different name. "For the last five years, the Clairol parents have helped pay for the registration to keep the Clairol name,'' said DeLeo, who started with the team in 1967. "They all feel the same way. They want their sons to play for Clairol. As long as I'm around, Clairol's going to be the sponsor." It would not seem right to see DeLeo in any other unifo…
Sailing Is a Breeze for Staples Students Sailing Is a Breeze for Staples Students Sailing Is a Breeze for Staples Students
Sailing Is a Breeze for Staples Students Staples High School is known for its successful sports programs. But one team that generates little attention is its 16-member sailing team, which competes in the nine-team Fairfield County Sailing League. "I've been sailing all my life,'' said senior co-captain Sarah Hyman, who has been a member of the team for four years. "There's not another sport like it. It's a mind game and trying to get your opponent into a bad situation and getting yourself into a better situation." Staples enters the final week of the season with an 8-6 record. In competition, sailors race Vanguard 420s with two-p…
