The defending league champion Mariners pushed a run home in the ninth to nip the Cannons, 3-2. Fairfield grabbed an early 1-0 lead in the first on a single and stolen base by Imtiaz Vohra. Tennis Ace Smacks Shots at Weston Club Professional tennis player Jared Palmer traded shots and offered advice to members of Aspetuck Valley Country Club in Weston on Sunday. Palmer visited the club and offered tips and instruction to about 25 club players. Palmer is a two-time tennis grand slam doubles champion. He won the Australian Open with Richey Reneberg in 1995 and Wimbledon with Donald Johnson in 2001. Palmer was ranked No. 1 in the world in doubles in 2000 — he won four tournaments that year with three partners — and owns 28 doubles titles. Darien Challenger Athletes Play Ball! Players in the Darien Challenger Little League program ran, threw and hit during a clinic Saturday at McGuane Park. The Challenger program is for children with special needs, and it is the state's largest with nearly 30 participants. The players work with teenage buddies, who help the athletes with their skills. On Saturday, members of the Darien High School baseball team joined in to help the Challenger athletes. Eastchester Baseball Kids Show Major League Skills Boys and girls from Eastchester pitched, hit and ran Saturday during the sectionals of a skills competition sponsored by Major League Baseball in Fairfield, Connecticut. Players from Fairfeld County, Connecticut and Westchester County competed for a spot in the regionals, which will be held at Citi Field, home of the New York Mets. But Kelly, the assistant to Yan Vengerovskiy at the Norwalk-based Maritime Rowing Club, is not done competing. Thus, the 23-year-old St. Luke's and Trinity College graduate is faced with a balancing conundrum that is not easily solved. Rain Holds Up Baseball Playoffs The rain that has wreaked havoc all week with Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference baseball returned Saturday and forced the postponement of the New Canaan-Brien McMahon softball game. It also changed the schedule for next week's league playoffs. New Canaan, which has already qualified for the playoffs, will play McMahon Monday at 4. Local Rowers Win at National Selection Regatta Rowayton's Brian de Regt and New Canaan's Charlie Cole earned the opportunity to travel to Europe for a World Cup event of their choosing and race for a place on the roster of the national team that will compete this summer at the 2011 World Championships in Bled, Slovenia. Both won races at the USRowing National Selection Regatta last week in New Jersey. De Regt, rowing in the men's lightweight double sculls final with New Haven's Jon Winter, led the entire way.
