Darien Unemployment, Jobs Both Drop In 2012 DARIEN, Conn. — Darien's unemployment rate at the end of 2012 was slightly lower than at the end of the previous year, but fewer people in town were working than a year ago. At the end of December, 8,619 people of Darien's 9,132-member work force were working with 513 people unemployed, according to the Connecticut Department of Labor. That equals an unemployment rate of 5.6 percent. In December 2011, the labor force was 9,369, with 8,825 working and 544 unemployed. That equals an unemployment rate of 5.8 percent. Darien Budget Could Increase By $2.9 Million DARIEN, Conn. -- Darien government spending is expected to increase by about $2.9 million next year, for a total of $43 million. This represents an increase of about 7.1 percent from the 2013 fiscal budget. Anticipated spending increases are caused by the cost of utilities such as gas and electricity, facility management, health care and worker compensation and insurance. Man Charged With Trying To Steal Cigarettes In Darien DARIEN, Conn. -- A Bronx man was accused  of trying to steal cigarettes from Stop & Shop on Sunday night, Darien Police said. Andrew Bradshaw, 21, was charged with criminal attempt to sixth-degree larceny and interfering with an officer. He posted a $5,000 bond and will go to court on Feb. 8. Employees at the Goodwives Shopping Center Stop & Shop saw Bradshaw behind the service desk around 9:50 p.m., according to police. Police: Teen Assaulted At Darien Playhouse DARIEN, Conn. - A teenage employee of the Darien Playhouse was assaulted while she was at work Sunday evening, according to police. The 16-year-old was working the concession stand when a group of girls came in and attacked her, according to police reports. The employee told police that she knew at least one of her assailants and that there had been some tension between the two. The group of attackers had left by the time police arrived on the scene.
