Darien High Wants To Keep Field Lights At 30 Feet DARIEN, Conn. — Darien High School and the Darien Junior Football League want to keep the temporary lights used for football practice at a height of 30 feet. The lights, which are used for evening practices for six weeks in the fall, had been kept at 20 feet high for years. Last summer the Planning and Zoning Commission changed the town ordinance allowing the lights to be raised to 30 feet and granted the Darien Junior Football League a one-year permit to try out the taller lights at the high school. Darien Police Charge Suspect With Attempted Larceny DARIEN, Conn. — Darien police arrested a man accused of trying to steal watches from David Harvey Jewelers on Wednesday. Gorham Valentine of Mount Vernon, N.Y., was charged with criminal attempt at third-degree larceny, interfering with an officer and resisting arrest. He posted $50,000 bond and will appear in court Feb. 3. Police received a call from David Harvey Jewelers about a suspicious man in the store, later identified as Valentine. Employees told police that a man believed to be Valentine had come into the store in 2012 and asked about high-end watches and left without buying one.…

Crime Drops In Darien In 2012 DARIEN, Conn. – Crime dropped in Darien in nearly every category in 2012, according to data released by the Darien Police Department. Only breaches of peace rose, while the number of stolen vehicles remained the same as 2011. Darien police responded to 19,072 reported incidents last year, 434 fewer than the previous year. This is the lowest number of incidents in at least five years. Larceny was the most common crime in Darien. There were 121 larcenies reported in 2012, down slightly from 123 the previous year. Police made 21 larceny arrests in 2012, and eight cases had multiple arrests. …
