Top Stories 2012: Darien Woman Drowns On Fourth Of July DARIEN, Conn. – As 2012 draws to a close, The Darien Daily Voice is looking back at some of the biggest stories of the year. On July 4, Amelia McCann, 45, drowned in her backyard pool at her Mansfield Place home. Police responded to a 911 call around 10 a.m. saying that a woman was submerged in her pool. Emergency crews arrived and tried to revive her with CPR, but were unsuccessful. She was taken to Stamford Hospital, where she was pronounced dead. On Sept. 24, Darien’s town government ended a years-long campaign to ban plastic shopping bags in town. The group Choose to Reuse in Darien had brought forward a proposed ordinance that would have prevented merchants from carrying the bags in favor of paper or reusable shopping bags.
