New Darien Sports Group Aims To Add More Turf Fields DARIEN, Conn. — Several Darien youth sports organizations are teaming up to serve as a unified voice for all youth and high school sports in town. As its first project, the group wants to install turf on existing grass fields to increase field availability. The Darien Athletic Foundation was started after various youth sports organizations began independently discussing the idea of raising money for more turf fields. Local Artist's Work Put On Display At Darien Library DARIEN, Conn. — The art of L.D. D’Isernia is on display in the Darien Library’s art gallery through Jan. 17. D’Isernia is a native of Rye, N.Y., who specializes in oil paintings. She was initially inspired by her great-grandfather, an accomplished oil painter in New York City. She graduated from SUNY-Purchase and studies with her mentor, Laurel Stern Boeck, an accomplished congressional oil painter. Darien To Open Gorham's Pond Tide Gates DARIEN, Conn. — Darien will open the Gorham's Pond tide gates Thursday for periodic flushing and cleaning of the pond. The gates are scheduled to be closed again Tuesday, Dec. 18. The opening or closing of the gates may be delayed depending on the weather, according to the town Department of Public Works. It is not possible to open the gates after extensive rainstorms or on very high tides because of the large volume of water flowing over the dam. The Department of Public Works intends to have the gates closed before Christmas.

Norwalk Man Tasered And Arrested On Drug Charges NORWALK, Conn. - A Norwalk man was Tasered and arrested on drug charges Tuesday afternoon, police said. Tyrone Patterson, 27, was charged with possession of narcotics, possession with intent to sell, possession near a school and interfering with an officer. Officers were patrolling the area of South Main Street Tuesday when they said they spotted Patterson with blood on his face. While they were talking to him, he twisted his body in order to hide his right arm from view, police said. Darien Luncheon Raises $12,000 For Stamford Charity DARIEN, Conn. — The annual Holiday Luncheon and Boutique at the Country Club of Darien raised more than $12,000 for the Stamford Advocate’s Giving Fund. Attendees also donated food and toiletries to the Person-to-Person food pantry. This was the 12th year of the holiday event, which was started in the wake of Sept. 11 as an opportunity to support local charities that benefit women and children. Rising Enrollment Causes Space Crunch In Darien Schools DARIEN, Conn. — Darien schools are running out of space to house the increasing number of elementary students who are enrolling. The administration is beginning to look at options for places to put all the kids. "We're getting very tight," Superintendent Stephen Falcone said. Darien Student Continues Geography Bee Winning Streak DARIEN, Conn. - Darien's eighth-grade geography whiz Michael Borecki placed first in Middlesex Middle School's National Geographic Bee for the third year in a row. Borecki has seen great success in the Geography Bee competitions over the years. This is his fifth straight year of placing first in his school's Geographic Bee, having won Hindley's competition as a fourth- and fifth-grader. Police: Norwalk Man Chases Off Prowler NORWALK, Conn. - A Norwalk man chased a prowler from his Dibble Street home after his family was awoken by the stranger in their backyard Monday night, police said. A husband and wife heard a noise in their backyard around 11 p.m. that they first thought was a raccoon.
