Darien School Board Candidates On Same Page For Budget, Language DARIEN, Conn. — The four candidates for the three open seats on the Darien Board of Education were on the same page Thursday night about the importance of staying within the budget and the world language program at a candidates forum. But she said the board has to take a monthly look at the budget and adjust so that it doesn't go over the amount appropriated…

New Darien Tutoring Center Makes Math Fun DARIEN, Conn. – It’s one thing to teach kids math, but it’s quite another thing to get them excited about learning it. That’s the goal of Darien’s newest tutoring center, Mathnasium. The center’s tutors provide kids with one-on-one instruction, enrichment and homework help, with learning plans structured to meet each student’s specific needs. Kids can also play math-based games and spend time with other students who may help in the same areas. Center Director David Lubner remembers the first time a student was in tears because he didn’t want to leave after his mother told him it was time to…

Darien Schools Adjust Math Curriculum Darien Schools Adjust Math Curriculum
Darien Schools Adjust Math Curriculum DARIEN, Conn. – For kids in Darien, this is not their parents' math lesson. Darien elementary schools are adjusting the math curriculum, putting a bigger emphasis on deeper conceptual understanding of math strategies and getting kids to work together to learn how to solve problems, school officials say. Rather than practicing drills and teaching equations, teachers might send students into groups to solve problems with real-world applications. The teachers would confer with the groups, track their progress and bring them together for a “math congress.” Students would explain their strategies…
