Olympian Orozco Inspires Gymnasts At Stamford Club STAMFORD, Conn. – Olympic gymnast John Orozco watched members of Stamford’s Arena Gymnastics display their skills at the club’s sixth annual Meet the Team exhibition and remembered. Chris Morrow Named Ridgefield Athlete Of The Month RIDGEFIELD, Conn. – As Chris Morrow emerged as a leader this winter for the Ridgefield High School ice hockey team, the Tigers responded with a 10-game winning streak that catapulted them squarely into contention to repeat as Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference champions. Morrow, a senior, was selected The Ridgefield Daily Voice Athlete of the Month. The Tigers entered the week 13-3 overall and 8-0 in the league. Danbury Girls' Basketball Team Suffers First Loss DANBURY, Conn. – Danbury High School’s girls' basketball team saw its 35-game, two-year winning streak against league opponents snapped Tuesday by Westhill of Stamford in a 46-35 loss. Danbury (16-1, 14-1) lost to a league opponent for the first time since falling to New Canaan in the first round of the Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference tournament on Feb. 19, 2011. Westhill Girls' Basketball Knocks Off Danbury STAMFORD, Conn. – Westhill High School used a tremendous defensive effort and Meg D’Alessandro’s 25 points, including the 1,000th of her career, to stun previously unbeaten Danbury Tuesday, 46-35. The Vikings improved to 15-2 overall and 13-2 in the league while running their winning streak to 12 straight. Norwalk Cal Ripken Baseball Taking Registrations NORWALK, Conn. -- The Norwalk Cal Ripken Baseball league, merged with Cranbury Baseball, is now accepting registrations online. In-person registration will be accepted at the Cranbury Chapel and Fox Run School from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Feb. 16. In order to participate, players must be between 4 and 12 years old as of April 30. There is a $5 discount for those registrations received by Feb. 16. Barlow Girls Basketball Drops Tight Contest To Kolbe REDDING, Conn. – Joel Barlow’s girls basketball team built an 11-point third quarter lead against Kolbe Cathedral on Monday only to be worn down by the Bridgeport team's size and strength in the final nine minutes. the Cougars’ size and strength wore down the Falcons. The Kolbe Cougars (12-4) held Barlow to three points in the fourth quarter and defeated the Falcons, 53-47, in a battle between South-West Conference teams. Westport Man To Climb Empire State Building's Stairs For Charity WESTPORT, Conn. – Westport’s David Schachne has climbed mountains all over the world. But on Wednesday, Feb. 6, he plans to make it up the Empire State Building in a much different fashion. Schachne will participate in the Empire State Building Run-Up. Greenwich's Karen Newman Earns Honor From State Writers GREENWICH, Conn. – Old Greenwich’s Karen Newman, who overcame breast cancer to become one of the world’s top age group triathletes, will receive this year’s Bob Casey Courage Award from the Connecticut Sports Writers’ Alliance. The honor will be presented at the group's 72nd Gold Key Dinner on Sunday, April 28 at the Aqua Turf Club in Southington. Newman, 51, was diagnosed with breast cancer on March 18, 2008. Westport, New Canaan Runners Square Off In Boston WESTPORT, Conn. – Westport’s Henry Wynne and New Canaan’s James Randon staged a dramatic dual Saturday in the Boys Mile at the New Balance Grand Prix track meet. People who wanted to witness it, though, had to travel nearly 150 miles. Wynne won the race in 4:11.73 in the race at the Reggie Lewis Track and Athletic Center in Boston.
