Darien Girls Indoor Track Team Sets Big Postseason Goals DARIEN, Conn. – After winning its 10th straight Eastern Division championship last week, the Darien High School indoor girls track and field team looks to win its first league championship since 2009 on Thursday. The Blue Wave might not end there. Darien has its usual depth, but its front-line performers make it a team to consider for Class L and State Open honors. Danbury Wrestlers Make Quick Work Of Fairfield Warde DANBURY, Conn. – Fairfield Warde’s wrestling team arrived late for Wednesday’s scheduled 4:30 p.m. start in a meet against Danbury High School. But Shane Jennings and the rest of the Hatters made sure the meet ended early. Jennings, a senior wrestling at 145 pounds, pinned his opponent in the first period and Danbury went on to a convincing 53-20 victory. Danbury (11-2) is the state’s top-ranked team. Greenwich Sisters Help Cheer Team Win National Title GREENWICH, Conn. – Sisters Camille and Cameron Monette of Old Greenwich helped their Xtreme Cheer teams win first place at the Varsity Athletic Championships last weekend in Providence, R.I. Camille, 15, and Cameron, 13, competed on Xtreme’s team, Inferno, an International Level 5 squad. The levels designate the difficulty associated with each routine. Wilton Wahoos Youngest Swimmers Among Top Finishes WILTON, Conn. – Seven- and eight-year-old swimmers in the Wilton Wahoos program competed in an 8-and-under competition last weekend in New Haven. In the seven-year-old division, Whitney Hess came in first place in the freestyle, backstroke, butterfly and the breaststroke. Norwalk's Xtreme Cheer Team Takes National Title NORWALK, Conn. – A coed cheerleading team from Norwalk-based Xtreme Cheer won first place last weekend at the Platinum Athletic Championships in Providence, R.I. It is the first national title for the squad, which began competing just last year. The team, called Inferno, includes athletes ages 17-and-up. The Level 5 team finished ranked among the top 20 in the world last year and competed in international competition against 50 of the top teams in the world last year. Danbury Race For Sandy Hook Switched To Hartford DANBURY, Conn. – The Sandy Hook Run for the Families, which had been scheduled to be run in Danbury, has been moved to Hartford because of overwhelming response. The race is scheduled for March 23. The Hartford Marathon Foundation, which is organizing the event, said the 6,500 runner capacity for the Danbury site had already been reached. The move to Hartford will allow more runners to compete. The previous announced capacity had been 10,000 runners. Easton's Chris Thomas Named Masters Triathlete Of Year EASTON, Conn. – Easton resident Chris Thomas was named the Masters Triathlete of the Year by USA Triathlon. The award recognizes Thomas’ achievements in 2012, which included a first-place age group finish at the Ironman 70.3 mile World Championships. He finished fourth overall and was the first American in the Ironman World Championships in Hawaii in October. Thomas was the overall winner of the Stamford KIC It Triathlon and the Park City Mossman Triathlon in Bridgeport. Fairfield Warde Wrestlers Decked By Danbury FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Fairfield Warde High School’s wrestling team arrived late for Wednesday’s matchup against the state’s top-ranked team in Danbury. Things did not go much better for the Mustangs once the meet began. Danbury won the first four matches for a quick 21-0 lead and went on to a 53-20 win. Olympian Plans Visit To Stamford Gymnastics Exhibition STAMFORD, Conn. – Olympic gymnast John Orozco will visit Arena Gymnastics in Stamford on Friday for the team’s sixth annual “Meet the Team” exhibition fundraiser.
