Stamford Basketball Player Shines At New Hampshire College STAMFORD, Conn. – Stamford’s Eric Jean-Guillaume despised losing so much in his first two years on the men's basketball team at Franklin Pierce University that he considered transferring. But he decided to stay at the Division II school in Rindge, N.H., and is now the catalyst behind a turnaround that has seen the team shoot up to become ranked 15th in the country and a favorite to win the conference championship. The fitness classes complement the core sports offered at Chelsea Piers. Member and nonmember pricing options are available. Norwalk Sports Club Hosts Baseball, Softball Clinics NORWALK, Conn. – Youth softball and baseball clinics will begin in January at the Sono Field House. A softball program for players ages 9-and-up begins Tuesday, Jan. 8, at 5:30 p.m. Baseball programs for players ages 6 to 8, 9 to 11 and 12 to 13 also begin in January. Membership in Sono Field House is not required. The clinics include hitting, fielding, baserunning and conditioning. Batting cages are also available. The clinics run through March. Stamford Cheerleading Team Wins First Event Of Season STAMFORD, Conn. – The Stamford-based Gold Coast All-Stars cheerleading competitive season got off on the right note when one of its team won grand champion honors at its fist meet of the season. Gold Coast’s Whirlwind team, for girls 11-and-under, won the Level 1 grand championship at the Jamfest Jingle Jam in Worcester, Mass. The Whirlwind had the best score of all Level 1 teams in each age group. The victory earned the team a fully-paid bid to the U.S. Finals in May. Five teams traveled to the competition for Gold Coast. Holt Named Darien's Top Fundraiser In Bike Challenge DARIEN, Conn. – Winston Holt was the top fundraiser among Darien riders in last summer’s Connecticut Challenge bike ride. Holt raised $27,500 for the ride, which benefits cancer survivorship programs. The eighth annual event raised a record $1.6 million. There were 1,087 cyclists from 78 communities in Connecticut. Riders from 19 states joined in the event. Since its inception in 2005, the Challenge has raised more than $9 million to support cancer survivors across Connecticut. Staples Boys Basketball Finds More Scoring Options WESTPORT, Conn. – Staples High boys basketball may have lost 84-75 to Norwalk on Tuesday, but coach Colin Devine learned a valuable lesson: He has scoring options behind senior forward Peter Rankowitz. Rankowitz, who averaged 17 points a game last year, figures to be the primary weapon for the Wreckers (1-1). Fairfield's New Lacrosse Program Looks To Grow Sport FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Fairfield’s Will Mraz been a player, coach, official and league organizer in his 40 years in lacrosse. Greenwich Gymnasts Perform At Exhibition GREENWICH, Conn. – Girls from the Connecticut Spirit All-Stars team in Greenwich performed at a recent gymnastics exhibition. The Spirit All-Star team, called the Amazonites, is made up of girls from lower Fairfield County and Westchester County. Girls on the team are from Greenwich and New Canaan and from Purchase, Rye, Port Chester and Pleasantville in New York. They performed at the Spirit Zone facility in Hamden. Staples Football Player Frusciante Named To MSG Team WESTPORT, Conn. – Staples wide receiver James Frusciante is the only Connecticut player named to the third annual MSG Varsity All-Metro area football team. The team was announced on Tuesday. It is made up of 26 standout high school football players from the tri-state area; the team is selected by MSG Varsity and The National Football Foundation.
