Zeus Swimmers Raffling Off Super Bowl Tickets NORWALK, Conn. – The Norwalk-based Zeus Swim Team is selling raffle tickets for the Super Bowl. Proceeds from the raffle will help the team as it searches for a new training facility. The Zeus swimmers practice at the Norwalk YMCA, which is scheduled to close at the end of December. The team also trains at Norwalk High School. Raffle tickets are $20. The grand prize is a trip for two to New Orleans for the Super Bowl on Feb. 3, 2013. Darien Football Names Captains For Next Season DARIEN, Conn. – Darien High School’s football team announced its captains for next year’s squad at a banquet last week. Nick Lombardo, Tommy Gasparino, Silas Wyper and Myles Ridder will be the leaders for Darien, which is coming off a 7-3 season in which it won four of its last five games. Ridder had 51 tackles, three sacks and an interception for Darien. Lombardo rushed 111 yards and three touchdowns, and also caught 25 passes and 11 touchdowns. Notre Dame-Fairfield Wins Boys Hoops Opener FAIRFIELD, Conn. – If there is one thing Notre Dame of Fairfield’s boys basketball team learned last season, it was how to win tight games. The Lancers provided further evidence of that in their season-opener on Thursday. Dan Upchurch scored 36 points and the Lanchers overcame a seven-point deficit in the final three minutes to stun Kaynor Tech of Waterbury, 75-70, in the opening round of the South-West Conference Tipoff Tournament at Notre Dame. Norwalk, McMahon Basketball Teams Slip From State Radar NORWALK, Conn. – Norwalk plays at Brien McMahon at 7 p.m. Friday in the annual battle for boys basketball bragging rights. But that is all that has been at stake for most of the last 25 years. But three times between 1980 and 1987, the Bears and Senators played for the league title — and Norwalk won twice. Wesport 5th-Grade Girls Basketball Team Goes To 5-0 WESTPORT, Conn. – The Westport Police Athletic League fifth-grade girls basketball team surrendered 14 points in two wins last weekend to raise its record to 5-0. Westport defeated Ridgefield, 20-4, and Monroe, 28-10, and continues its impressive start under coach Karen Puskas. The fifth-grade boys team won three games to get to 4-0. Young Norwalk Football Players Tackle Foes In Florida NORWALK, Conn. – Four players from the Norwalk Packers eighth-grade football team played for a Colonial League All-Star team earlier this month as part of the American Youth Football championship weekend in Kissimmee, Fla. Nick Granata, Jeff Capone, Jimmy Makszin and Greg Gudalewski played for the Colonial All-Stars. Granata, a quarterback, and Makszin, a two-way lineman, were co-captains. Westport 8th-Grade Girls Basketball Team Stays Undefeated WESTPORT, Conn. – The Westport Police Athletic League eighth-grade girls basketball team continued its fast start by winning two games to improve to 6-0 on the season in the Fairfield County Basketball League. Trinity's Howsie Named Stamford Athlete Of The Month STAMFORD, Conn. – Trinity Catholic High’s Shaquan Howsie remembers introducing himself to coach Pete Stokes back in the eighth grade. Four years later, they cemented a bond that future Crusaders can hope to emulate. Howsie was named The Daily Voice’s Athlete of the Month for Stamford after leading the Crusaders to an 8-3 record and their first state playoff appearance since 1993.
