Westport Girl Closes In On Top Of Snowboarding Hill WESTPORT, Conn – Westport’s Julia Marino, a 15-year-old high school sophomore and one of the nation’s top amateur snowboarders, has set her sights on the Olympics. “I was scared about competing at first, “ Marino said. “I did one competition, and I really liked it. Promising Season Looms For Weston Basketball WESTON, Conn. – Weston’s boys basketball team went 13-10 last season with its first winning record since 2007. This year’s squad might be even better. The Trojans, who opened with a 78-60 victory Monday over New Fairfield, have an inside-outside balance that will be hard to defend. Staples Boys Basketball Falls In Overtime To Norwalk WESTPORT, Conn. – Staples High's boys basketball team rallied from behind several times in the final quarter Tuesday against Norwalk High. But unfortunately for the Wreckers, the Bears had one more final push. Norwalk outscored Staples, 17-8, in overtime Tuesday to earn a 84-75 victory in a Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference game. Norwalk Basketball Edges Staples In Overtime NORWALK, Conn. — With the score tied in overtime and Norwalk High’s best inside player out with foul trouble, the Bears turned to senior captain Jabari Dear to deliver in Tuesday’s game against Staples. Weston Basketball Honors Newtown Victims In Opening Win WESTON, Conn. – The Weston High School boys basketball team will carry a reminder of the victims of the Sandy Hook tragedy with them this season. The Trojans opened the season Monday with a 78-60 victory over New Fairfield. Bryan Hocter Steps Down As Stamford Football Coach STAMFORD, Conn. – Stamford High School football coach Bryan Hocter resigned Monday after three years as head coach of the Black Knights. Stamford went 2-8 this fall under Hocter, who ends his career at the school with a 15-14 mark. Stamford’s best season under Hocter was a 7-2 mark in 2011. Hocter took over in 2010 after Kevin Jones resigned following the 2009 season. Hocter was an assistant on Jones’ staff for seven years before becoming head coach. Notre Dame-Fairfield Hoop Star Bounces Back From Mishap FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Notre Dame of Fairfield basketball player Earl Coleman scored 15 points and made several terrific late-game plays Thursday to help the Lancers beat Kaynor Tech, 66-59, in their season-opener.
