Darien Swimmer Olivia Leunis Named Athlete Of The Month DARIEN, Conn. – Darien High School senior Olivia Leunis is still shaking her head over her November swimming accolades. She won three events at the State Open and helped her team win its first State Open title. She also helped the team to win class and league championships. “It’s still unbelievable that the team achieved the State Open title,’’ said Leunis, who was selected the Darien winner as The Daily Voice’s Athlete of the Month. “It was great to see the hard work pay off at the end.” Leunis was a big reason why. Norwalk High Soccer Player Named Athlete Of The Month NORWALK, Conn. – It has been three weeks since Norwalk High soccer player Andrew Melitsanopoulos and his teammates won their first state championship in 46 years. The thrill remains refresh for Melitsanopoulos, who was chosen as The Norwalk Daily Voice’s Athlete of the Month for November. “When we turned our jerseys in, I thought it might start to wear off a little bit,’’ said Melitsanopoulos, a defender. “But it hasn’t. I think I’ll be on cloud nine for a while.” He was one of the leaders for the Bears, who finished 21-1-1 and won a share of the Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic …

Weston's Hassett Named Athlete Of The Month WESTON, Conn. – Tyler Hassett’s contributions to the Weston High School football team this fall are well documented. The legacy the senior set for the players behind him might be far more lasting. Hassett earned The Daily Voice’s Athlete of the Month honors after leading the Trojans to a 9-3 record and their first state tournament berth since 1989. Hassett did it all for the Trojans as the quarterback, defensive back and punter. He also set an example off the field as a leader and was a big reason the Trojans have improved since he started playing regularly as a sophomore. “As player, t…

The senior center is the only returning player from last year’s team, which went 16-7 and lost in the second round of the state tournament. Norwalk lost five players who saw significant time to graduation. But three others who were expected back are gone, too, through injury, transfer o…

He did, and he paid for it — in more ways than one. Alvarado finished 39th in the field of the Top 40 runners from across the country at the race in San Diego. But he aggravated an injury that bothered him earlier this fall after running the race's first mile in 4:47. He finished in 16:28 for the 5-kilometer course. He’s hoping that his energy will rub off on his players. Dustin begins his first year as the coach of the Senators on Wednesday when they open at Staples. McMahon went 5-16 last season under Mo Tomlin, who resigned shortly after the season. The Senators went 17-6 in 2010-11, but they have had just two winning seasons since 2005.
