3 Stamford Synchro Skating Teams Win Medals STAMFORD, Conn. – Three Southern Connecticut Synchronized Skating teams won medals last weekend in the Terry Conners Open at Terry Conners Rink in Stamford. The Shadows, an Open Juvenile team, won a gold medal. The Shimmers, a prejuvenile team, took a silver, and the Sprites, a beginner 2 team, also won won silver. The teams are based in Stamford and Darien. Fairfield Prep Basketball Faces A Top New Jersey Team FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Fairfield Prep meets New Jersey basketball powerhouse St. Anthony High School and its legendary coach, Bob Hurley, in a preseason scrimmage Saturday at Alumni Hall. Tip-off is 4:30 p.m. Hurley’s Jersey City squads have been the most dominant high school team in the state's history. He has won 26 state championships and more than 1,000 games in 39 years as a coach, despite aging facilities and financial limitations. On Feb. 2, 2011, Hurley became only the 10th coach in high school history to win 1,000. Five of his teams have gone undefeated, including his 2007-08 team. …

Westport Teams Tip Off In Youth Basketball League WESTPORT, Conn. – Westport teams sponsored by the Police Athletic League tipped off in the Fairfield County Basketball League last weekend. The fifth-grade girls' team edged St. Mary’s, 24-19, Easton, 21-14, and Danbury, 27-12. The girls are coached by Karen Puskas and visit Ridgefield and Monroe this weekend. Fairfield Giants Cheerleaders Place 5th At Nationals FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Fairfield Giants cheerleaders finished fifth this week at the Pop Warner Nationals in Orlando, Fla. Fairfield competed in the Pee Wee Level 1 division. A team from Metuchen, N.J., won the competition. The girls, ages 9-12, are the second team in the 46-year history of the Giants to compete for a national title. Westport Girls Earn Soccer Honors WESTPORT, Conn. – Soccer standouts Sabrina Toole and Julia Marino of Westport earned post-season accolades after helping St. Joseph of Trumbull win a share of the league championship and finish second in the state tournament. Toole, a junior, made the Fairfield County Interscholastic Athletic Conference first team. Young Norwalk Football Players Head To Playoffs NORWALK, Conn. – Two Norwalk eighth-grade football players will play Saturday in a Football University national championship playoff game in Ohio. Dre Russell and Courtlyn Victrum will play for the Connecticut South team against a team from Massachusetts in a third-round game. The winner advances to the quarterfinals Sunday. Russell and Victrum were part of a Connecticut team that won two games last weekend, including a 28-0 win over Long Island in the second round. Westport 8th-Grade Girls Basketball Team Makes Perfect Start WESTPORT, Conn. – After winning its division in the Fairfield County Basketball League last winter, the Westport Police Athletic League eighth-grade girls team started a new season by winning four games in the Joe Coppo Memorial Tournament last weekend. Rowers From Norwalk Club Make College Choices NORWALK, Conn. – Girls from the Norwalk-based Connecticut Boat Club routinely find their way to some of the nation’s top college rowing programs. Darien Field Hockey Player Earns Regional Honor FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. – Players from New Canaan, Wilton, Darien and Greenwich were named this week to the National Field Hockey Coaches Association all-region team. Named to the Southern New England Regional squad were New Canaan’s Bridget Falcone; Wilton’s Madison Hendry, Joanne Nazareth and Lizette Roman-Johnston; Darien’s Kat Huber; and Greenwich Academy’s Annie Leonard, Pamela Schulman and Emilia Tapsall. St. Luke's Boys Basketball Sees Hope For Better Days Ahead NEW CANAAN, Conn. – Brian Kriftcher is convinced better days are ahead for the St. Luke’s boys basketball team. He doesn’t know when his team’s fortunes will turn for the better but knows it will be soon. “We should be good for years to come,’’ Kriftcher said after the Storm lost their season-opener, 75-60, against a strong Greens Farms Academy team Monday. “Last year we took our lumps.
